Camp Kandalore has operated for more than fifty years in Haliburton County and, proposing that there is an inherent and fundamental connection between camps and their bioregion, the author creates a comprehensive account of these fifty years from the beginning to the present. The early years from 1944 to the mid 1950s saw the building of the camp under the supervision of Keith Cleverdon and the establishment of a camping program centred on outdoor education and an appreciation of heritage and adventure. Expansion of the camp under Kirk Wipper in the '60s and '70s saw physical changes and an emphasis on tripping programs and native heritage. This entire area is predominantly considered the southern part of the Canadian Shield. However due to the constraints of time the focus is on the Muskoka Area. Some ecosystem services provided by wetlands that are considered to be valuable include: gas regulation; climate regulations; disturbance regulation; and water filtration. Recommendations for further study include having accurate mapping of the wetlands, by type and area; creating a wetland valuation system like the one created for Southern Ontario, that gives a value to each process; and, finally, to address how different wetlands function in regard to each of the processes. The focus of this paper is an historical overview of these lakes and rivers within the limits of bioregional theory; how the patterns of settlement and the resource development of the area were determined by these physical attributes. Specifically, the author concentrates on those waterways flowing south, draining into the Trent Water System. These include the lakes and tributaries flowing into the Gull and Burnt Rivers, and Eels Brook. Beginning with a look at native groups within these systems and their use of lakes and rivers for hunting and transportation along with their sense of land stewardship, the paper moves on to the early exploration of the waterways by Europeans as they sought a practical military route between Georgian Bay and Ottawa. With the development of colonization roads, settlement moved forward. The importance of the waterways to the logging industry, which followed, is documented. Concluding that the waterways played a crucial role in the historical development of the region, the paper presents ideas for possible future research. An explanation of the ecology of the area provides basic information about tree species and growing conditions. Past treatment of the forest resource helps solidify an understanding of present conditions. At Haliburton Forest, more than one leisure group frequently uses all trails within the forest. This makes it exceedingly difficult to assess the impacts created by each activity. The activities of off-road vehicles, especially the snowmobile purists, are now generating much publicity, most of it adverse.This report looks at the environmental impact of snowmobiling specifically with respect to noise levels and engine emissions. Through the extraction of aggregates, landscapes are altered which effect ecosystems that contain numerous species, including humans. Water and noise pollution are extensions of aggregate extraction. Extraction sites are known for extending their original land boundaries thus effecting and altering natural landscapes. Haliburton County is a destination area for many types of outdoor recreation activities and residents and tourists engaging in these activities have an economic impact on the area. The purpose of this project is to gain an understanding of the relative economic impact of a number of different activities including; snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. The project includes secondary research on economic impact studies done in other areas and an overview of methods used to collect data. Students then developed a survey tool and conducted a pilot study focusing on winter activities. Finally the students refined a survey tool and developed a long-term implementation plan (to be initiated in the spring of 2009) for the collection of economic data on people participating in the outdoor activities listed above. This report seeks to record the community and council cooperation during the creation and maintenance of the James Cooper Lookout trail (JCL trail). The JCL trail was made possible via the positive partnership and cooperation between the Township of Algonquin Highlands, the Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network (TTN), and local citizens. This evaluation examines the relationship between the Township and the TTN by documenting and analyzing its achievements as a model for recreational trail development. This evaluation is intended to serve as a model for successful trail development so that other Townships and Municipalities can follow it as a guide for the development of their own recreational hiking and walking trails. We aim to use the example of the JCL trail to show that partnerships between private landowners and public townships can function well, and that hiking and walking trails serve as successful and legitimate income generating investments. Primarily, the case of the JCL trail shows that the presence of a strong and committed community based organization is vital to the successful creation of recreational trails. Without the support of local organizations, the construction, maintenance and upgrading of recreational trails is both economically and logistically impossible. Secondly, we found that a Town Council who recognizes and values the importance of trail development will be competent and capable to develop successful partnerships with community-based organizations. Town Councils must play the role of mediator between the volunteer base and the public in order to facilitate this cooperation. Thirdly, a community who recognizes the socio-economic benefits of developing recreational trails, especially those in areas that depend upon tourism and seasonally oriented activities, are more likely to house volunteers who are willing to donate their time and resources to community oriented activities, such as trail development and maintenance. Fourthly, landowners whose property is adjacent to public trails need to begin developing more flexible and cooperative attitudes with their local Town Councils. Private property owners have to start granting access to parts of their property to local Town Councils in order to foster the development of recreational trails for the community’s benefit. If not, communities will continue to experience the enclosure of common spaces that has become increasingly common. Gooderham Abstract A summary of the resource. When considering how land has been developed in rural communities of Southern Ontario it is important to consider all of the different social and economic factors that have led to the unique growth each area. The research within this report highlights there factors and is specific to one small hamlet in Haliburton County. The hamlet in the study is Gooderham, which, like many other small rural hamlets, originally developed because of the resource industry. The extraction of resources created a need for services because of the large number of people the industry employed. The services tended to develop in areas that had the most appropriate physical features and in areas that were close to the resource extraction sites. Gooderham developed in Glamorgan township along the Monck road towards the end of the 19th century. It grew just south of Pine Lake because of a great location for a water powered mill. The research examines how Gooderham has changed to a service based economy from it's early days as a resources based economy. Gooderham provided many services during the resources extraction time period but the services that developed were geared towards a resource based economy. Today, the residents of Gooderham no longer rely on the same services. Today, cottagers, commuters, and retirees make up the population of Gooderham and modern services include home renovation, communications (phone, internet), road works, plumbing, electrical, heating, contracted service work, home building companies, etc. Many of these services are non-local but still contribute a great deal to the economy of Gooderham. When examining this report the reader will be taken through a detailed history of the area with an emphasis on how, where, and why the land was developed the way that it did in the hamlet of Gooderham.
