Report of a survey conducted for Haliburton Highlands Health Services regarding health issues and needs in the area. Continuing evaluation of HHHS and health care needs in the Haliburton Highlands. Expands on TP-393.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Life and health care are influenced by living in a rural community. The community is an important source of information about what services are needed and what existing services need improvement. The current study posed 12 questions, covering general demographic information, the availability of family physicians, the role of the nurse practitioner, the adequacy of present health services, and the importance of health care services in the next 5 to 10 years. 1013 telephone numbers were chosen at random from the Haliburton Highlands section of the 2004/2005 telephone book to take part in the telephone survey, resulting in 89 responses. All survey responses were translated into numeric data and the data were analyzed using SPSS software. The frequency counts and percentages were calculated and arranged from the most adequate or important health care needs to the least adequate or 3 important. In addition, Chi-Square analyses were used to determine the gender and age differences in health care needs. <br /><br />The percentage of all participants who felt a particular health services was adequate ranged from a high of 80.4% for emergency services such as emergency room, 911, and EMS (ranked #1) to a low of 19.3% for family physician (ranked #16). The percentage of all participants who indicated a particular health services as an important health service ranged from a high of 96.6 % for emergency services such as emergency room, 911, and EMS (ranked #1) to a low of 21.6 % for services for substance abuse (ranked #16). The three most important services for the future in Haliburton County were identified as emergency services, family physicians, and dental care services. While both emergency services and dental care services were ranked high in adequacy and importance, family physicians were ranked high in importance and low in adequacy. This suggests that the recruitment and retention of family physicians and/or nurse practitioners should be a high priority.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The paper sets out to verify if indeed there exists a rivalry between the municipalities of Haliburton and Minden, a view held by some in the area. The history of the settlement of the area is outlined as a possible source of such rivalry with different methods of obtaining land and the development of the rail line affecting the type of settler attracted to each area. Some of the social, economic, and political characteristics of the region are looked at as adding to the sense of competition and the specific issues of proposed municipal amalgamation and hospital usage are discussed. Personal reflections representing the senior, middle-aged, and adolescent perspectives round out the debate.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Bioregionalism examines our connection with local ecosystems and our relationships with each other. Agriculture is an essential part of this association, as the sale and consumption of locally grown food represent one of the many ways in which communities are directly connected to the land.<br /><br />This paper recognizes the need for additional sustainable food systems in Haliburton County. There is a need for further research into a farmer's market as well as Sustainable Ecological Alternatives for Living (SEAL). Work with SEAL could also lead into the documentation of the accomplishments of Haliburton County's many home gardeners.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The aim of this research is to provide the Palliative and Bereavement Care Coalition with information regarding death and dying in order to assist in identifying current gaps in care supports as well as planning for care of Haliburton County's aging population.<br /><br />This information was collected through three methods. Data was gathered from the Haliburton hospital and Access Centre databases. The third portion of the research was collected through surveying funeral directors and doctors in Haliburton County.<br /><br />The findings indicated that a large portion of deaths were cancer related with the number one cause of death being lung cancer. The surveys from funeral directors and doctors revealed that there were an increasing number of residents choosing to die at home rather than in a facility.<br /><br />If Haliburton were planning to position themselves as a retirement community, then a closer look into the migration habits of the region would be helpful in planning for future development. The results of this report point to a need for palliative care focused on cancer treatment and a need for increasing home services and support for residents who choose to die at home.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Victoria Railway line from Lindsay to Haliburton was decommissioned as a rail line in the 1980s and began a new life as a recreational rail trail. Today’s Haliburton County rail trail spans 34 kms from Kinmount to Haliburton Village. This report discusses making improvements to the Rail Trail for environmental sustainability, health, tourism, and associated community development in Haliburton, while also documenting the ‘value’ the existing trail brings to the community. Some potential improvements include proper signage, improving the trail surfacing to be more accessible, as well as promoting the trail in the community and planning for a safe multi-use environment.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This essay argues that Canadian social policy has historically affected women’s lives in a detrimental manner and continues to affect women’s access to affordable housing. Specifically, the roles of age, socioeconomic status, and geographical location in dictating women’s interactions with government housing policies are discussed. The evolution of the welfare state was critical to the development and shaping of housing policies, and in initiating both positive and negative change in women’s lives. These ideas are discussed in conjunction with a case study of Haliburton County, Ontario, and connected to overarching themes and policies that affect Ontario women as a whole. This case study of Haliburton provides an in depth examination of a specific group of women’s experiences and issues with housing. This section of the essay focuses on single women, ages 45-64 living in the rural context of Haliburton County in order to demonstrate a specific group that is most in need of consideration in housing policy changes. Also mentioned are some housing movements in Ontario and Haliburton that are attempting to bring attention to women’s housing shortages.

Description
An account of the resource
Design and implement a survey to assess the potential social impact of a proposed rural airport expansion. Collect qualitative information regarding residents' perspectives about the expansion as they relate to the rural character of the area.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The development of municipal infrastructure in any area has the potential to alter the character of the community. The social impact from development can be both favourable and unfavourable to the local residents. This study of the possible social impacts of an expansion to the Haliburton/Stanhope Airport in 2006, was mainly generated by residents surrounding the airport. The proposed expansion has produced mixed feelings from the local community. However, the majority of local residents feel the potential negative attributes out way the positive benefits. <br /><br />While an expansion may bring positive benefits to the greater area, the local community may suffer from such impacts as noise and air pollution. The anticipation of further development and traffic in the years following expansion may lead to further social uncertainty and eventually lower the quality of life. The majority of residents have an attachment to the rural characteristics for relaxation and recreational proposes; therefore, their perceived impacts of the airport expansion seem to be less favourable. The effects of an expansion throughout the study area vary according to both demographic characteristics and their perceived lifestyle. However, no significant patterns emerged from the research. <br /><br />This preliminary assessment does not address the longer term impact of an airport expansion. If an expansion is approved, dissatisfaction among residents may cause further land use conflicts and unforeseen effects. Further development and disruption of the peaceful rural characteristics may affect resident’s decision to remain within the community. The study indicates that an airport expansion in the local community is of high concern among local residents.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Cottage Dreams is a unique recovery initiative which offers cancer survivors and their supporters a week stay at a cottage in Ontario that have completed their cancer treatment in the past 9 months. The Cottage Dreams staff desired an evaluation that would provide them with information pertaining to how the program facilitated the healing and recovery process of past participants. Evaluators from Trent University designed an evaluation that would examine the effectiveness of the program, the benefits it offers to participants, and the role of the program within the complementary, integrated care approach to healing and recovery. The evaluation consisted of 32 in-depth, open-ended phone interviews with past program participants. The main findings from the research, which were positive in nature, pertained to aspects of healing and recovery that the week at the cottage afforded visitors. Those aspects of healing and recovery which were identified by participants were: a will to live which entails a change in outlook or perspective, being in an environment which is away from everyday life and cancer, being in a natural setting of wildlife and environment, and having time to make emotional connection with others. Each of these elements is a fundamental component within a complementary, integrated approach to healing and recovery and adheres to the Cottage Dreams objectives.
Included in the report are findings about the program itself, which were also positive. Past participants were appreciative of the non-discriminatory nature of the program, the organization’s professionalism, and many were touched by the generosity of cottage donors and the Cottage Dreams staff. The evaluators feel that Cottage Dreams plays an important role in the cancer healing and recovery process and has positively affected the lives of many cancer survivors and their supporters. Taking the comments of past participants into consideration, recommendations have been formulated for Cottage Dreams to consider for future program changes and direction.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Central to the bioregionalism movement is the need to increase the self-sufficiency of communities in the area of food security. Haliburton, although designated rural, has very little agriculturally viable land and this necessitates looking for alternatives to conventional agricultural activities.<br /><br />This paper looks at the work of the Highland Harvest Community Shared Agricultural system. The health and economic issues encountered in Haliburton are discussed based on a report from the Haliburton, Kawartha and Pine Ridge District Health Council and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. This leads to a look at the issue of food security in Haliburton. The concept of Community Shared Agriculture is introduced, followed by details of how the Highland Harvest CSA operates. Suggestions for future research topics conclude the paper.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The author of this paper believes herbalism to be the therapy that is most bioregional in its approach to health. Herbalism offers more than a healthier body; it also shows us in a concrete way how we are connected to the life that surrounds us. By using herbs for medicine we become connected to the plant life around us and gain a greater understanding of our place in the environment. By knowing our bodies, and by knowing our connections to the plant life around us and the soil, water and air, we can realize the actuality of living in a place. <br /><br />Alternative therapies are becoming more and more popular in Haliburton County as elsewhere and there is a reason for this. People find that they feel healthier when pursuing more than one doctrine of health care.

Examines the development of a wetlands boardwalk linking the River Walk Trail to Minden walking trail system. Discusses economic, ecological and social value of wetlands, construction options, and educational oportunities.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Creating a trail system across the wetland in Minden is not only important in connecting other trail systems but it also provides educational opportunities, strengthens the community, encourages partnerships, and promotes stewardship. This report is the starting block in creating the boardwalk system. The report discusses the value of wetlands, boardwalk structure options and considerations, boardwalk location options, educational opportunities, and makes recommendations for next steps. Recommendations include: obtaining a detailed map of the wetland, and an Environmental Impact Assessment. These two things will lead to more informed recommendations for boardwalk placement, design, and interpretive themes. Public consultation meeting pre-construction, and long-term monitoring are also recommended.

The ultimate purpose of the research was to bring information and people together to strengthen the community's overall health. The advisory group described the project in the following way:"The health of a community is influenced by a wide range of factors, many of which lie outside traditional definitions of "physical and mental health". These factors, known as the social determinants of health, are the economic and social conditions under which people live that determine their health.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this project was to develop and demonstrate skills in writing and presenting community based research on a social determinant of rural health issues. It includes a series reports for the Health Information for Haliburton County project. The reports focus on a specific rural health theme. The topics to covered were: Income and social status, Housing, Education and Literacy, Social support networks, Personal health practices and Coping skills, Healthy child development, Women and poverty, and Food security. The final reports feature three-parts: a literature review on how this issue relates to health in rural/remote areas, a community profile for Haliburton County based on available secondary data relating to the selected theme, and a research proposal to fill gaps in exiting knowledge about the theme in Haliburton County. The recommendations from each report are included in the summary of recommendations.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Healthy, Active Communities roundtable (2008) developed the following definition of a healthy, active community as a place where there are opportunities and places for people of all ages and abilities to be physically active. It is a healthy place to live, visit, work, learn and play. Based on this definition, seniors in Haliburton County were surveyed about their satisfactions with: outdoor spaces & public buildings, transportation, housing, civic participation & employment, social participation, communication & information, community support & health services, and finally, respect & social inclusion. There is a general satisfaction of the current social and physical environment for seniors in Haliburton County. Over 60% of respondents feel there is a general awareness of the needs of seniors in the County and over 85% feel valued at least most of the time as a senior resident. However, some of the top concerns that were cited for seniors are the seating and shelter in parks, snow removal of sidewalks, the cost and scheduling of community social events and the high cost of attending such events. It is apparent that a community centre would be a beneficial addition to the County. Overall, the majority of residents feel that Haliburton County has become an age-friendly community that encourages and promotes healthy, active and positive aging.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Kennisis Lake Planning Committee has completed an extensive survey from which data has been gathered on what is important to the lake residents and residents on surrounding lakes. This paper is intended to provide a springboard for implementation of a future lake / watershed plan for community residents. It addresses what might motivate people to act on recommendations outlined in the plan and what might motivate people to adhere to legislation already in place. Combining marketing strategies greatly improves the probability that the desired behaviour will be observed. Three key areas to focus on in developing a strategy are accessibility of the behaviour, communication, and a social norm surrounding the behaviour. This is much simplified, however these three areas are fundamental to a successful marketing strategy. The easier and clearer the behaviour is to engage in, the more likely it will be observed.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Kennisis Lake Planning Committee would like to focus their efforts on bringing the Lake Plan to the attention of cottager owners. This report aims to offer insights on how best to present the package and communicate the information so that it encourages active reading and discussion of the plan within the community. The report also aims to provide methods for optimizing feedback from he residents, as well as offer several strategies for the committee to provide feedback to the community.
The project looks at: 1) existing methodology that can facilitate community engagement with the lake plan, 2) methods that can be used to effectively exchange feedback between a community and a committee, and 3) publication and distribution strategies the committee could use to further the community engagement plan.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
<p class="p1">A main component of the theory of bioregionalism is that its strength and function ability begin with the individual commitment of the people in a given community. The paper puts forth the idea that foraging can make a valuable contribution to the development of a local bioregion as it helps develop individual values and skills which permit the participant to put into practice some of the aspects of the theory.<br /><br />Drawing from a number of sources, the paper is a catalogue of edible plants organized first by general tree type or habitat.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>For each plant noted, common and scientific botanical names are given as well as distinguishing characteristics, habitat appearance, blooming period, and season to harvest.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Information concerning preparation for medicinal and food purposes is included and notes of interest complete each record.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Hand-drawn illustrations accompany the text and all information is cross-referenced in an index.</p>

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The history of the one-room schoolhouse is presented from the perspective of differing voices and based on unstructured interviews with residents, primarily within Stanhope Township. Major themes of the interview included personal experience with the one-room schoolhouse, the changes as viewed through an educational paradigm, local yarns and anecdotes. Further research was obtained from the archival holdings at the Stanhope Township Office. Included in this paper is a brief history of the schools in Stanhope Township, with a focus on Boshkung School, S.S. No. 3. The paper is then broken down into analytical themes: looking at community and school, gender perceptions in the school system, transportation giving way to transitions, and how education both creates and removes ties to the land. Transcripts of several interviews are included in appendices.

Description
An account of the resource
Identify, create, and enhance educational programs of the constructed wetland wastewater treatment system at a local Fish Hatchery. Assess curriculum links to themes such as surface and source water protection and identify and suggest ways to maximize the educational benefits available from pilot constructed wastewater project.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Currently, a focus on the loss of habitat, filling of wetlands, and the contamination of watersheds, are considered priority in the Ontario curriculum. By identifying valued educational benefits and promoting linkages to existing curriculum, the Haliburton community will benefit through the recognition and utilization of the Haliburton fish hatchery facility. To fully undertake this research project, several steps were required to encapsulate the creation of the required curriculum. Research into the processes, policy, and overall creation of constructed wetlands was needed to ensure that the proper education could be conducted. Upon learning the fundamentals, review of previous research and lesson plans had been conducted. Contact with local public teachers was done in order to fully assess their objectives and goals for the lesson plans. A tour of the local fish hatchery took place to determine what is expected of the school tours. <br /><br />The goal for this project was to undertake new curriculum development for grades four and eight, with an emphasis on the geography curriculum. This curriculum is centred on a tour to the Haliburton Hatchery. As well, the host requested a revising and enhancing of the existing lesson plan for Grade 10 Academic Science. The development of the teaching packages incorporating Treatment Wetland technology into the existing education curriculum was essential to promoting green technologies and expanding the community involvement of Haliburton.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this project is to examine youth in Haliburton County with respect to their employment readiness needs in terms of training and apprenticeships in the trades. Surveys and interviews conducted with students, government agencies, high school staff, and non-profit agencies form the basis of a qualitative analysis.<br /><br />A literature review of apprenticeship programming both local and far-reaching introduces the subject and is followed by a detailed description of the research methodology employed. Results are presented organized around a demographic profile, youth perceptions of trades, and possible barriers to programming. Details of services and programs available to youth interested in apprenticeships are documented. A discussion of results and recommendations both for youth and community conclude the paper.
