Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This essay argues that Canadian social policy has historically affected women’s lives in a detrimental manner and continues to affect women’s access to affordable housing. Specifically, the roles of age, socioeconomic status, and geographical location in dictating women’s interactions with government housing policies are discussed. The evolution of the welfare state was critical to the development and shaping of housing policies, and in initiating both positive and negative change in women’s lives. These ideas are discussed in conjunction with a case study of Haliburton County, Ontario, and connected to overarching themes and policies that affect Ontario women as a whole. This case study of Haliburton provides an in depth examination of a specific group of women’s experiences and issues with housing. This section of the essay focuses on single women, ages 45-64 living in the rural context of Haliburton County in order to demonstrate a specific group that is most in need of consideration in housing policy changes. Also mentioned are some housing movements in Ontario and Haliburton that are attempting to bring attention to women’s housing shortages.

The ultimate purpose of the research was to bring information and people together to strengthen the community's overall health. The advisory group described the project in the following way:"The health of a community is influenced by a wide range of factors, many of which lie outside traditional definitions of "physical and mental health". These factors, known as the social determinants of health, are the economic and social conditions under which people live that determine their health.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this project was to develop and demonstrate skills in writing and presenting community based research on a social determinant of rural health issues. It includes a series reports for the Health Information for Haliburton County project. The reports focus on a specific rural health theme. The topics to covered were: Income and social status, Housing, Education and Literacy, Social support networks, Personal health practices and Coping skills, Healthy child development, Women and poverty, and Food security. The final reports feature three-parts: a literature review on how this issue relates to health in rural/remote areas, a community profile for Haliburton County based on available secondary data relating to the selected theme, and a research proposal to fill gaps in exiting knowledge about the theme in Haliburton County. The recommendations from each report are included in the summary of recommendations.

The goal of the research, which is to develop an understanding of the challenges affecting provision and access to housing in rural areas, is accomplished through the fulfillment of the following four objectives and their associated tasks: 1. Conceptualize and contextualize the issue of rural housing, assess the state of academic knowledge pertaining to rural housing; 2. Describe existing rural housing programs and policies in Ontario, understand the programs and policies that affect and target rural housing; 3. Identify community challenges and issues relating to rural housing in Haliburton County, develop an understanding of the unique challenges affecting housing in Haliburton County and the solutions that have been developed to address such challenges; and, 4. Assess local capacity (solutions) for addressing rural housing issues in Haliburton County, provide an assessment of the local capacity to deal with housing issues given the existing policies and approaches to housing issues.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This research paper examines the factors that affect the outcomes of housing projects. While broadly trying to answer the question, ‘what makes housing projects work?’, this paper also seeks to better understand the context in which these projects come into being. There are a number of factors that influence the priorities, process and outcomes of housing projects; research, reflection, and discussion of these factors—both between and within groups seeking to establish housing—can strengthen individual housing projects, and can improve the overall state of housing in Haliburton County. Briefly then, there are no easy answers to the question at hand—only more questions, and the requirement that those interested in housing attempt to better understand the many possible answers to these questions.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This project provides an overview on the issues and challenges surrounding rural housing development in a changing world. Armed with an agenda of attracting economic growth, Haliburton County and Minden Hills are at a crossroads for peaking developer interest in spurring housing development. Through an assessment of municipally owned properties, vacant land has been surveyed for the potential for housing development in Minden Hills. This project summarizes available locations for development and types of housing suitable for Minden's needs using an intensive literature review and quantitative and qualitative methods including mapping and surveys. Recommendations about facilitating development and necessary housing characteristics are also included.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Over 2019-20, Fourth Year Trent International Development Studies (IDST) students Sarah Cumming and Lindsay Dixon undertook a full-term, large-scale research project on how to better engage and retain the young adult population in Minden Hills.
Hosted by the Township of Minden Hills (Emily Stonehouse) and supervised by IDST faculty Derya Terhan, students gathered and analyzed data from their literature review, a 2019 local community consultation, an online survey and several telephone surveys.
This report was designed to equip the Township of Minden Hills with a foundation for up-to-date research and to suggest initiatives as support for change.
Highlights from the Study:
· The top four factors for the study participants in deciding where to live were Employment, Family Ties, the Physical Environment and Housing;
· 59% of participants felt engaged in the community of Minden Hills and the largest group within that (46%), only felt somewhat engaged;
· Leaving their community to go to high school in Haliburton means young adults in other townships may start feeling disconnected from an early age;
· Recreational programming for young adults was seen as limited, and often geared towards the senior population and during working hours;
· A shortage of evening entertainment activities led to feelings of isolation;
· There is a lack of formal support systems for youth employment in the County;
· Increased internet access was identified by several survey participants in the open-ended questions - as “what is important to this age group is the ability to network easily”;
· While literature findings did not find it to be a significant factor in attracting young adults, study participants felt as though Minden Hill’s natural beauty and rural location had a positive influence in their decision where to live.
Page 35 of the report includes a table of recommendations that the Township of Minden Hills can consider in their strategic planning going forward.

Haliburton County
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This report looks at the options available for sustainable housing building and renovation projects in Haliburton County, Ontario and residents' perceptions of sustainable housing. The project is based around answering three research questions in reference to Haliburton County. They are 1) What are the options for sustainable housing, 2) How do residents perceive sustainable housing, and 3) What are the similarities and differences between the perceptions of different resident groups.
Data was gathered by reviewing literature on rural geography , sustainable communities and environmentally friendly building. Results determined that there are many environmentally friendly materials for housing construction and renovation, including some locally available options within Haliburton County. This data led to the creation of handbook which will act a reference guide to community members and will be distributed through the local organization Environment Haliburton.
Survey responses were compared between income groups and between permanent and seasonal residents. These comparisons revealed that regardless of income or resident status, cost is the most prevalent deciding factor in residents' choice of whether or not to use environmentally friendly material or alternative energy sources in a construction or renovation project. These include durability and longevity, affordability and environmental impact. Survey responses also expressed concern over the lack of available information about sustainable building options. This revealed a gap in research which the handbook will aid in filling.

Haliburton County
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This resource accompanies the report "Building Green in Haliburton County: Perceptions of Sustainable Housing."

This handbook is an opportunity for you to explore a variety of ‘green’ options for housing renovation and construction projects in Haliburton County. Using environmentally friendly materials, or ‘green building’ as it is commonly known, is a growing practice worldwide.

Haliburton County is the setting of the Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Sir Sanford Fleming College, and so the area has the unique opportunity of having some buildings, built using alternative and environmentally friendly materials, open to the public. There are many advantages to using these materials when doing your next construction and renovation project. By using materials from a local source and alternative sources of energy, you can lighten your load on the environment.
