Bob Lake is an inland lake located in Minden, Ontario, that is home to the Bob Lake Association. We completed a benthic macroinvertebrate assessment of the lake following Ontario Benthic Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) protocol using samples collected in the fall of 2022. The goal of this assessment is to contribute to a 5-year study establishing the baseline conditions of Bob Lake and the benthic invertebrate communities that inhabit it. Only one year has been completed prior to the submission of this report, which accounts for the second year. The results of this research will contribute to lake monitoring data and advise the Bob Lake Association on future lake management decisions. Using the random teaspoon sampling method, we identified 100 invertebrates from each replicate of the three sites sampled. We then evaluated the results of each site using several indices of species diversity and richness. Our evaluation shows that the lake conditions are within a normal range for the Haliburton area, but the remaining three years of this study must be completed to effectively confirm these results. The purpose of this project is to collect benthic macroinvertebrate (also referred to as “benthics”or “benthos”) data to determine the health of Kabakwa Lake. Benthos are small spineless organisms that reside on the bottom of water bodies among sediments and aquatic plants. Due to their fairly stationary nature, they live most, if not all of their lives in the same area on the lake bottom close to shores. This makes them ideal indicator species as they are heavily influenced by organic and inorganic pollution and disturbances in the water. Benthos provide insight into the current state of water and habitat quality and can be measured every year to determine trends in lake health. 2022 marks the second year of sampling on Kabakwa Lake. The benthos community counts are input into select indices (percent EOT and Simpson's Diversity Index) to identify yearly trends and to calculate the health of the water. This project is being completed in partnership with the Halls and Hawks Property Owners Association (HHPOA). Our findings confirm that rural communities lack the capacity to support people with eating disorders. This study revealed a variety of factors associated with the inability to obtain effective treatment in a rural area, including poor health literacy, lack of funding and staff, direct and indirect costs of treatment, and inadequate communications and referral systems. This study aims to determine the best practices for Eurasian watermilfoil control, the methods that have the best chance of success, and the most cost-effective solutions, while also focusing on how coconut fibre mats differ from burlap mats as a bottom barrier control technique. A thorough examination of over 30 peer-reviewed articles discussing Eurasian watermilfoil outbreaks in different areas and their control methods to eradicate such outbreaks were used. Nine methods of control were discovered through these articles, each vastly different in terms of time, effort, cost, equipment, and required knowledge for use. The methods of control described herein include rototilling, hand harvesting, bottom barriers, the milfoil weevil, lake drawdown, grass carp, suction harvesting, herbicides, and an integrated approach using two or more of the methods. Hand harvesting was one of the most cost-effective control methods for small areas, while bottom barriers were among the most cost-effective options for larger areas. The use of Euhrychiopsis lecontei, the milfoil weevil, was an option proven effective for use in the same region as Drag and Spruce Lakes and less costly than some other methods. This study has found that an integrated approach using hand harvesting and bottom barriers seems to be the most cost- and time-effective technique because it allows for optimal results in specific areas as needed without long-term harmful effects to native species. This integrated approach would also allow the Drag and Spruce Lakes Property Owners Association to continue providing their services and programming without significant lake access disruptions. Five separate properties constitute the land trust, including the Dahl Forest, Smith Forest, Norah’s Island, Fred & Pearl Barry Wetland Reserve, and Barnum Creek Nature Reserve. Land trusts are instrumental in the conservation of native flora and fauna, and are often focused on the protection of a specific type of habitat (Brewer, 2003). The HHLT is unique in that all four types of wetlands (marsh, bog, fen, and swamp) are found on the properties (Haliburton Highlands Land Trust – 2020 Climate Change Project, 2021). Natural wetlands are crucial as they act as sinks for carbon sequestration (Mitsch, 2013), and play an active role in the cycling of important nutrients like nitrogen (Fennessy, Rokosch & Mack, 2008).
