This report is the second phase to chronicle the settlement history of Canning Lake. To focus on the oral history component of this project, two methods were selected, questionnaires and individual interviews. Questionnaires were distributed in October 2003 within the fall newsletter put out by the Lake Association. The interviews were conducted over the phone and recorded to be transcribed. There was no specific time length for the interviews and interviewees were encouraged to speak freely. Both the questions for the questionnaire and the interviews were developed in phase 1 of this project. Categories for answers were assigned such as previous owners of the property, buildings on the property, their reason for choosing Canning Lake and the date of property purchase. Analysis on the transcripts suggest the reason for choosing Canning Lake mainly comes from family and friend links, teaching community, and minor changes to original properties. Land use practices have only altered slightly and that early times on the lake displayed low population, poor roads, and personal entertainment. These results are the beginning of an interesting analysis which show information from various areas of the lake itself. Description An account of the resource This project represents the second phase of a project proposed by the Canning Lake Property's Association to chronicle the settlement history of the Lake and concentrates on the oral history of this settlement story. The researcher uses questionnaires and interviews to obtain information about the history of Canning Lake. The basic geography of this region is fairly clustered around Georgian Bay, and includes the following major areas: Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, North Bay, Parry Sound, Algonquin Park, Pembroke, Bancroft, and Manitoulin Island (Chambers et al, 1997). This entire area is predominantly considered the southern part of the Canadian Shield. However due to the constraints of time the focus is on the Muskoka Area. Some ecosystem services provided by wetlands that are considered to be valuable include: gas regulation; climate regulations; disturbance regulation; and water filtration. Recommendations for further study include having accurate mapping of the wetlands, by type and area; creating a wetland valuation system like the one created for Southern Ontario, that gives a value to each process; and, finally, to address how different wetlands function in regard to each of the processes. This report seeks to record the community and council cooperation during the creation and maintenance of the James Cooper Lookout trail (JCL trail). The JCL trail was made possible via the positive partnership and cooperation between the Township of Algonquin Highlands, the Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network (TTN), and local citizens. This evaluation examines the relationship between the Township and the TTN by documenting and analyzing its achievements as a model for recreational trail development. This evaluation is intended to serve as a model for successful trail development so that other Townships and Municipalities can follow it as a guide for the development of their own recreational hiking and walking trails. We aim to use the example of the JCL trail to show that partnerships between private landowners and public townships can function well, and that hiking and walking trails serve as successful and legitimate income generating investments. Primarily, the case of the JCL trail shows that the presence of a strong and committed community based organization is vital to the successful creation of recreational trails. Without the support of local organizations, the construction, maintenance and upgrading of recreational trails is both economically and logistically impossible. Secondly, we found that a Town Council who recognizes and values the importance of trail development will be competent and capable to develop successful partnerships with community-based organizations. Town Councils must play the role of mediator between the volunteer base and the public in order to facilitate this cooperation. Thirdly, a community who recognizes the socio-economic benefits of developing recreational trails, especially those in areas that depend upon tourism and seasonally oriented activities, are more likely to house volunteers who are willing to donate their time and resources to community oriented activities, such as trail development and maintenance. Fourthly, landowners whose property is adjacent to public trails need to begin developing more flexible and cooperative attitudes with their local Town Councils. Private property owners have to start granting access to parts of their property to local Town Councils in order to foster the development of recreational trails for the community’s benefit. If not, communities will continue to experience the enclosure of common spaces that has become increasingly common. When considering how land has been developed in rural communities of Southern Ontario it is important to consider all of the different social and economic factors that have led to the unique growth each area. The research within this report highlights there factors and is specific to one small hamlet in Haliburton County. The hamlet in the study is Gooderham, which, like many other small rural hamlets, originally developed because of the resource industry. The extraction of resources created a need for services because of the large number of people the industry employed. The services tended to develop in areas that had the most appropriate physical features and in areas that were close to the resource extraction sites. Gooderham developed in Glamorgan township along the Monck road towards the end of the 19th century. It grew just south of Pine Lake because of a great location for a water powered mill. The research examines how Gooderham has changed to a service based economy from it's early days as a resources based economy. Gooderham provided many services during the resources extraction time period but the services that developed were geared towards a resource based economy. Today, the residents of Gooderham no longer rely on the same services. Today, cottagers, commuters, and retirees make up the population of Gooderham and modern services include home renovation, communications (phone, internet), road works, plumbing, electrical, heating, contracted service work, home building companies, etc. Many of these services are non-local but still contribute a great deal to the economy of Gooderham. Previous research in active transportation mostly focuses on the urban or suburban context, with limited studies at the rural level. This study looks at the relationship between the built environment and active transportation in the local rural community of the Village of Minden. The project involved the use of a survey with a mix of quantitative and qualitative questions. The surveys were distributed in two stages: (1) in the Village of Minden using a mail in system and (2) at a local grocery store that allowed a greater representation of the more rural areas. Surveys were used to identify individuals’ active transportation patterns and the barriers to active transportation in the local area. The results illustrate current usage patterns by local residents, as well as problems with current infrastructure in the community and barriers to active transportation. Survey results indicate that although some people walk or bike, most drive as a main form of transportation in the community. Active transportation requires linkages and connections in order to function, and distance presents significant problems for active transportation in a rural community. People would like to use the trails more often, but the availability and quality of the trails as well as sidewalks is a limiting factor to active transportation in the village. The survey findings show significant problems with the maintenance of current trails and sidewalks. This project examines the history of the Sunny Rock Lodge Bed and Breakfast building and the surrounding property, located on the Burnt River and Canning Lake in Snowdon Township. The lodge has a rich and diverse history associated with the Finnish immigrants who developed their summer cottage on the river into a year-round resort called the Sunny Rock Villa. This project examines the history of outdoor recreation in Southern Ontario, the history of Finnish immigration to Toronto, Ontario, and the history of the Lodge building and the people who have been associated with it from 1927 to the present. Archival research and personal interviews were conducted in order to collect numerous fragments of the Lodge's colourful past. The development around the Sunny Rock property also spawned an entire community of Finnish immigrants who flocked to the area and attempted to recreate there what it reminded them of in their native Finland. Abstract A summary of the resource. In developing questions for an Envirothon, several important tasks were undertaken to grasp a full understanding of the competition. First, related literatures were found in order to discover what research had been done, and what areas were in need of more insight. Articles on classroom competition, ethics of pressured environments, urban issue domination, as well as thought pattern classification are researched and discussed. This paper also outlines the important methods that were used to collect valuable secondary and archival data such as sample questions, study packages and student curriculum lessons. The analysis procedures such as organization and categorizing questions into different styles and formats (i.e. easy vs. hard, multiple choice, true/false or fill in the blank), as well as colour coding, careful reading, and counting are discussed in detail. Also included is an in-depth presentation of my research findings. This section outlines how question styles tend to be at an advanced level, formats were generally distributed evenly, and how most sets satisfied Bloom’s taxonomical classification system. Also discussed is a comprehensive analysis on how this research project can be applied to the real world, such as in classrooms, occupational environments, or Envirothons yet to come. The building is 2400m2, with an 1800m2 roof, half of which faces SSW. The roof is sloped at 21º which is a sufficient slope to receive optimal solar radiation without placing the panels on a bracket mounted system. There are 2 proposals for photovoltaic panels to be placed on the south face of the roof. The first takes advantage of the MicroFIT government incentive for rooftop solar projects under 10kW. The mental health diversion program in the Four Counties region services many individuals, some of which are young adults between the ages of 18-25. The HSJCC has expressed a desire to study the impact the program has on young adults with mental health issues as well as the community. Aspects of the program were examined such as: the options and costs associated with the program, services utilized by the clients during and after diversion, recidivism, factors that contribute to the crime and court decision, the success rate of the program, and the pressures it places on the court and correction systems. It was determined that the cost of diversion is much lower than incarceration, which in turn contributes positively to the community. Although recidivism rates and an evaluation of services used after diversion is complete were not established, the success rate of the program has shown to be quite high for these young adults. Upon completion of the study, two of the most prominent recommendations made to improve the program were: to implement a follow-up procedure to collect further data on the recidivism rates and services used by clients after their diversion and to introduce pre-charge diversion throughout the Four Counties. Overall, this mental health diversion program has shown to be efficient and beneficial to the client and the community. The development of municipal infrastructure in any area has the potential to alter the character of the community. The social impact from development can be both favourable and unfavourable to the local residents. This study of the possible social impacts of an expansion to the Haliburton/Stanhope Airport in 2006, was mainly generated by residents surrounding the airport. The proposed expansion has produced mixed feelings from the local community. However, the majority of local residents feel the potential negative attributes out way the positive benefits. While an expansion may bring positive benefits to the greater area, the local community may suffer from such impacts as noise and air pollution. The anticipation of further development and traffic in the years following expansion may lead to further social uncertainty and eventually lower the quality of life. The majority of residents have an attachment to the rural characteristics for relaxation and recreational proposes; therefore, their perceived impacts of the airport expansion seem to be less favourable. The effects of an expansion throughout the study area vary according to both demographic characteristics and their perceived lifestyle. However, no significant patterns emerged from the research. This preliminary assessment does not address the longer term impact of an airport expansion. If an expansion is approved, dissatisfaction among residents may cause further land use conflicts and unforeseen effects. Further development and disruption of the peaceful rural characteristics may affect resident’s decision to remain within the community. The "Settlement History of Gooderham," is a project residents felt was important to capture the memories of older citizens in order to preserve the information. Information was collected from interviews and literature review. The basic results of this study reflect the physical and social changes, which have happened in Gooderham since it's establishment in 1873. When it was first settled, Gooderham, was mainly supported by a resource-based economy including lumbering and agriculture. As the economy grew stronger, the settlers were able to improve roads. Eventually the resource-based economy became a service based one, as tourism and cottager entered the area. Now, the Gooderham School is closing but the town still has a busy summer season. This history is explored in more detail in this report, with a focus on the settlement patterns along Gooderham's roadways. The report also makes recommendation for follow-up student and community projects to continue this work. The purpose of this report is to make recommendations to the Township of Minden Hills for more sustainable approaches to water management and heating. The municipality runs an arena that has diverse energy needs. One element of the system is the heating and cooling of water - generating hot water for showers and making ice for the skating surface. This project is intended to explore creative options for heating and cooling to maximize efficiency and minimize waste. We have investigated energy saving and water conservation options for the arena's water usage. These include showers, sinks, toilets and the water used to make ice. Technologies to reduce water use and energy requirements for water heating were researched as a way to make the arena more sustainable. Abstract A summary of the resource. The purpose of this report is to provide the Haliburton Land Trust with some criteria to use when selecting areas to preserve as Natural Heritage. Haliburton County exists within a complex ecological transition zone, an ecotone known as The Land Inbetween. The ecotone is made up of Canadian Shield to the north and limestone plains to the south. Like many areas within this ecotone, Haliburton County is a center of recreation, cottager ownership and eco-tourism and has no major industrial urban center. Damage to Haliburton’s Natural Heritage is occurring and it will continue to do so unless appropriate Land Use Planning and significant and sensitive areas are protected. The primary goal of this report is to familiarize the reader with the basics of current government policy and protocol in the establishment of Land Trusts in Ontario, and applying it to specific heritage features that are present in Haliburton County. Light pollution is a growing concern for rural areas, and the preservation of the night sky has become a popular issue among ecologists and enthusiasts alike. The full impact of light pollution on human and ecological health has yet to be uncovered, however initial findings are distressing at the very least. The issue is gaining momentum in the political arena, mostly due to pressures and lobbying from concerned environmental groups and organizations. While the reduction of light pollution in urban areas is of primary focus in the literature to date, special attention must be paid to rural areas where the natural world is in much closer proximity to light sources, and are therefore more susceptible to its effects. This report seeks to define light pollution and the effects it has on the natural environment, and suggest ways to minimize or eliminate these effects. Recommendations for Kennisis Lake include suggestions for voluntary action and bi-law changes.
