The aim of this research is to provide the Palliative and Bereavement Care Coalition with information regarding death and dying in order to assist in identifying current gaps in care supports as well as planning for care of Haliburton County's aging population. This information was collected through three methods. Data was gathered from the Haliburton hospital and Access Centre databases. The third portion of the research was collected through surveying funeral directors and doctors in Haliburton County. The findings indicated that a large portion of deaths were cancer related with the number one cause of death being lung cancer. The surveys from funeral directors and doctors revealed that there were an increasing number of residents choosing to die at home rather than in a facility. If Haliburton were planning to position themselves as a retirement community, then a closer look into the migration habits of the region would be helpful in planning for future development. To reconstruct the past events occuring at Willow Beach as series of interviews, archival research and literature reviews have been drawn upon. Using multiple forms of qualitative research and analysis, the cultural landscape of Willow Beach has been recreated using a series of thematic maps. However, the complexity of the cognitive image can not be entirely captured within a thematic map or series of maps. To compensate for this potential loss of meaning during the transformation of information to maps, a chronological "story" has been produced to accompany the map series. This settlement history follows a small plot of land in the Haliburton Highlands from its use as a camping site for Algonquin Indians in the years prior to 1850, to a cottage resort in 2003. During this 153-yer period, the cultural landscape of this lot has changed a great deal. Moving from a wilderness in every semse of the word, to open farmland, to a resort where the wilderness is slowly moving back onto the lot, although a much more "tamed" version of wilderness. Several key informant interviews in the Coboconk area, along with a literature review, provide insight into the history of work and play in Coboconk. From its inception, this project has been an attempt to find meaning in the changing character of Coboconk by remembering and historicizing its pioneer past. This paper has explored how a concept such as the frontier myth has created the foundation for community building, and maintains relations of kinship and friendship in a small-town setting. This project explores the values embedded in the history of main street Minden so that they can be applied to the present day in order to maintain the character of the street and the bond between people and community. The purpose of this project, proposed by the County Town Museum, was to provide the museum with a chronological catalogue of the owners and businesses on Minden's main street between 1860 and 1920. The Kennisis Lake Planning Committee has completed an extensive survey from which data has been gathered on what is important to the lake residents and residents on surrounding lakes. This paper is intended to provide a springboard for implementation of a future lake / watershed plan for community residents. It addresses what might motivate people to act on recommendations outlined in the plan and what might motivate people to adhere to legislation already in place. Combining marketing strategies greatly improves the probability that the desired behaviour will be observed. Three key areas to focus on in developing a strategy are accessibility of the behaviour, communication, and a social norm surrounding the behaviour. This is much simplified, however these three areas are fundamental to a successful marketing strategy. The purpose of the current study is to analyze the alternative treatment options, as opposed to traditional sentences, in Haliburton County available for youth with mental health conditions in the criminal justice system. I will determine whether or not the current programs are effective in reducing repeat offending or if improvements need to be made by comparing the programs to ones in the literature. I analyzed interviews with mental health and justice service agency members and compared the data to alternative treatment programs located in the literature and testimonials from people with mental health conditions. I found that the programs in Haliburton are most successful (positively impact youth) in assisting youth when a positive relationship is established before starting counselling and individualized treatment plans are created for each youth, but there was insufficient evidence to determine if the programs did or did not result in a reduction in repeat offending. Many areas presenting issues included the lack of transportation and specialized services in rural areas, lack of educated police, and inaccessible services. I have determined that the programs in Haliburton County are effective for assisting youth with mental health conditions in the justice system, but could be improved upon if the above issues are addressed. The purpose of this project is to create a comprehensive inventory of cultural sites in Highlands East and map that information to make it more accessible to the public. The intention is also to provide an easy reference for staff and visitors to learn about the history of the municipality and to bring archival research to life in the form of a map. This material will be used as a basis for developing the cultural assets in the municipality for the development of tourism and economic growth. The project researches the Highlands East area and provides detailed information collected via archival research of tangible cultural sites and resources. The community will decide which sites it wishes to expand on in the second stage, again to strengthen the development of tourism and economic growth in Highlands East. This project is the first stage of a cultural mapping and inventory plan of the Municipality of Highlands East that will develop on the strengths of the community based upon cultural sites and local history. This project identified cultural sites in the municipality and includes a literature review about tourism development in rural areas. The inventory of sites includes brief historical information about the site coupled with cartographic information from Google Maps. Also included in the conclusions are recommendations for future development of the Highlands East cultural mapping projects and its outliers. Generations of families have lived in Highlands East. Older inhabitants of Highlands East carry stories that bring richness to the community. By combining cultural interests, adventure tourism interests, and eco-tourism development together, Highlands East can create a stronger community by reaching its full potential in tourism and economic growth.
