Description
An account of the resource
An audit of all operations for Point in Time with regard to the four areas the Childrens Mental Health Organization identify as required for accreditation. These include program, staffing, governance and management.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Point in Time (PINT), a centre for children, youth and parents in Haliburton County, is embarking upon a journey to become accredited by Children's Mental Health Ontario (CMHO). The focus of this research is to develop recommendations for PINT on how to create an evaluation framework.
The report begins includes a brief look at background information on PINT and on the accreditation process. How the CMHO accreditation process operates, and the advantages PINT will gain by becoming accredited are also discussed. These include standards relating to program evaluation, treatment, termination, prevention, formal research, quality assurance, accountability and clinical records.
This study aims to introduce suggestions for an evaluation framework that would aid PINT not only in becoming accredited, but that would also benefit the staff at PINT by providing them with information that they could use to better their services. Recommendations based on literature reviews, case studies, and staff interactions include: to write policy relating to evaluation for every program/area; to have one staff member in charge of quality assurance; mandatory audits of clinical records files; that future planning should include client feedback such as client satisfaction questionnaires; recording client satisfaction results in a database to be used for quality assurance data; using focus groups to gather feedback; and that PINT should begin the process of setting their standards and goals, and developing indicators to measure these goals.

An account of the resource
Purpose is to identify ways to strengthen the process of amalgamation of the administration of the Ontario Early Year Centres in the Haliburton area.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this project if to inform the strategic planning process that is currently (2005) being undertaken for the Ontario Early Years Children's Learning Centre (OEYC), and to identify ways of strengthening the process of amalgamation of the administration of the Ontario Early Years Centre Haliburton Victoria Brock and the OEY Children's Learning Centre (daycare) in Minden through the medium of evaluation. THe study involved questionnaires and interviews. In general, the findings revealed that the Minden daycare staff are generally dissatisfied with the restructuring and are not optimistic about a continued partnership. Parents were generally less concerned with the restructuring and more concerned with ensuring continued quality and service. Haliburton and Lindsay staff members were aware of the change but some were not concerned by it. Two strategic alternative are proposed. The first being continued partnership and restructuring and attempting to deal with the emerging issues, and the second being more the Minden daycare to operate independently.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Water festivals across Ontario often incorporate many of the themes as outlined by the Children's Water Education Council (CWEC): conservation, technology, science, attitude, and protection. Many festivals go on to create additional themes and activities and some of these variations are outlined in the first section of the paper.

Moving on to Haliburton County, issues specific to holding such a festival locally are outlined by people involved in water resources management. These range from environmental concerns to those of water quality. The concepts being covered by the Leslie M. Frost Natural Resources Centre curriculum are identified as having significance to the area. Gaps in current programming and a study of existing sources for curriculum development are outlined. Finally, recommendations are made for further research as a Children's Water Festival is considered for the Haliburton area.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The 2007 Haliburton-Muskoka Children’s Water Festival was successfully received by both the elementary students and Trent volunteers. Going into its fourth year, the festival is organized and operated by many important members. They draw their volunteers from the surrounding community to help run and organize over 35 activity centres for elementary students ranging from grades 3-6. The Haliburton-Muskoka Children’s Water Festival approached Trent University in regards to establishing a partnership. The pilot project entailed 120 Trent University students volunteering at the water festival over a three day period. After volunteering at the festival, students were asked to reflect on their service learning experience through an online survey and one page reflection piece. Results indicate that the students had a worthwhile learning experience, and an opportunity to improve and build upon critical life skills. They also provided important information regarding the activity centre’s they operated, and ideas on how to improve the activity station. The festival organizers and Trent faculty were also given the opportunity to reflect on the Trent University and Haliburton-Muskoka Children’s Water Festival relationship. Both parties were pleased with the available student resource provided to the festival, and would like to see this relationship further improve and grow strong. Both the students and organizers offered valuable recommendations for the Haliburton-Muskoka Children’s Water Festival.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The life of Mary Northway and her association with camps and camping is the focus of this paper as it outlines her early years and family experiences in Algonquin Park, Glen Bernard Camp and Camp Wapomeo.

In 1941, Mary Northway and Flora Morrison purchased Windy Pine, a property with 1700 feet of shoreline on Kushog Lake in Haliburton County where the two women lived and entertained, surrounded by the natural world they loved. From here they ran a girls' canoe tripping camp and it was at Windy Pine that may people associated with Trent University became friends and attended as visitors, often assisting with maintenance work. In 1982, after Flora's death, Mary donated Windy Pine to the University along with an endowment fund for its maintenance. Abstract

Violence against women is looked at with specific reference to the issues unique to rural communities such as Haliburton and the founding and functioning of the Haliburton Women's Emergency House, based on the Habitat for Humanity model, is outlined. Newspaper clippings dealing with issues surrounding the project are included in an appendix.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Camp Kandalore has operated for more than fifty years in Haliburton County and, proposing that there is an inherent and fundamental connection between camps and their bioregion, the author creates a comprehensive account of these fifty years from the beginning to the present.

The early years from 1944 to the mid 1950s saw the building of the camp under the supervision of Keith Cleverdon and the establishment of a camping program centred on outdoor education and an appreciation of heritage and adventure. Expansion of the camp under Kirk Wipper in the '60s and '70s saw physical changes and an emphasis on tripping programs and native heritage. The Historic Canoe Collection was begun and culminated in the construction of a canoe museum. Successful innovations by subsequent owners are described, concluding with the recognition that each camper will have unique memories of time spent at Kandalore.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Instilling the values of bioregionalism can be difficult as it involves changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour. The natural place to start is with the children of our society and the author maintains that camps, if based on positive environmental ethics, can play a very strong role in fostering a child's sense of relationship with the earth and community.

The development of such learning through camp experiences is presented in general terms with reference to the aims of camping associations and environmental philosophers. Specifically, these objectives are looked at in more depth with reference to Camp Allsaw and the work of Sam and Marjorie Hambly as they pursued camping focusing on the principles and practices of ecology and conservation. The camp stresses the bioregional principles of community, the development of a sense of place, and the importance of home as the place to make a difference and its program is presented as an example of how camps can play a crucial role in shaping the desired attributes of bioregionalism.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The history of the one-room schoolhouse is presented from the perspective of differing voices and based on unstructured interviews with residents, primarily within Stanhope Township. Major themes of the interview included personal experience with the one-room schoolhouse, the changes as viewed through an educational paradigm, local yarns and anecdotes. Further research was obtained from the archival holdings at the Stanhope Township Office. Included in this paper is a brief history of the schools in Stanhope Township, with a focus on Boshkung School, S.S. No. 3. The paper is then broken down into analytical themes: looking at community and school, gender perceptions in the school system, transportation giving way to transitions, and how education both creates and removes ties to the land. Transcripts of several interviews are included in appendices.

Camp Wanakita (Koshlong Lake)
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In 1979, Steve Van Matre of the Institute for Earth Education (IEE), developed a curriculum titled Sunship Earth, a program based on the seven ecological principles that make up our world: energy, cycles, diversity, community, interrelationships, change, and adaptation. The program is dedicated to broadening an understanding of the place in which we live and this paper focuses on Camp Wanakita and its application of the ideas within its camping program. Wanakita is a Hamilton-Burlington YMCA camp located on Koshlong Lake and the role of the YMCA, its philosophy, and that of camping in general is described as a preface to the paper.

The history behind the implementation of the Sunship Earth program at Wanakita in 1986 and its subsequent development is outlined along with an in-depth look at the principles of the program and the need for continuing relationships with schools in the community as the experiences of Sunship Earth become entrenched in the participants and make for better future citizens.
