Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This project focuses on the sources of water quality degradation that occur because of homes/cottages and the practices associated with owning them. The impacts of homes and cottages on water quality was examined by conducting an extensive literature review on the topic and compiling our findings into this summary. This project will examine the history of the Upper Stoney Lake area to give context about the watershed that it is located in. It will then focus on three separate impactful activities; shoreline modifications, fertilizer/septic tank use, and boating. This literature review will address the scale of these issues in Upper Stoney Lake, what type of wildlife or species they are impacting, and the dangers of these impacts if they continue.

Description
An account of the resource
Presents the prelimary proposals of the Commission on Development Planning and Reform in Ontario regarding cottage country issues and the feedback from environmentalists and the Haliburton County Planner.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.

There is an interest in the Haliburton bioregions for environmentally sustainable economic development, particularly in regards to further tourist and cottage development. The mandate of the Commission on Planning and Development Reform in Ontario is providing an opportunity for these interests to be incorporated into land use-affecting provincial legislation. This discussion paper presents the Commission’s preliminary proposals regarding cottage country issues and some initial responses to these proposals by environmentalists and the Haliburton County Planner. It is concluded that the Commission is taking some bold steps towards incorporating the principle of ‘sustainability’ into the planning process, but that only more comprehensive changes, and even long-term value change, is likely to make the concept viable in the Haliburton bioregions. There are three sections of this report which are included for the sake of providing background information. Readers familiar with the state of the present planning process in Ontario, its problems and omissions, may want to pass over the sections entitled ‘The Legal Framework’, ‘The problem’, and ‘Principles of Sustainable Land-Use Planning’. This paper is a contribution towards the ‘bioregional’ literature of the Haliburton Highlands in that it seeks to present an understanding of how an ‘outside’ body of law that actually affects these natural and human communities can be improved to more closely meet the needs of the local bioregion; economic and environmental.

Description
An account of the resource
This paper follows a small plot of land in the Haliburton Highlands from its use as a camping site for Algonquin Indians in the years prior to 1850, to a cottage resort in 2003.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Drawing on the strengths of both History and Geography, a settlement history of the Willow Beach property has been compiled. To reconstruct the past events occuring at Willow Beach as series of interviews, archival research and literature reviews have been drawn upon. Using multiple forms of qualitative research and analysis, the cultural landscape of Willow Beach has been recreated using a series of thematic maps. However, the complexity of the cognitive image can not be entirely captured within a thematic map or series of maps. To compensate for this potential loss of meaning during the transformation of information to maps, a chronological "story" has been produced to accompany the map series.

This settlement history follows a small plot of land in the Haliburton Highlands from its use as a camping site for Algonquin Indians in the years prior to 1850, to a cottage resort in 2003. During this 153-yer period, the cultural landscape of this lot has changed a great deal. Moving from a wilderness in every semse of the word, to open farmland, to a resort where the wilderness is slowly moving back onto the lot, although a much more "tamed" version of wilderness. Through all the physical and cultural changes that have occured on this small plot of land on the shores of Lake Kashagawigamog one characteristic has remained: the nature of hospitality th owners have all shown, and the pride they take in sharing the beautiful Haliburton County with others.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Kennisis Lake Planning Committee has completed an extensive survey from which data has been gathered on what is important to the lake residents and residents on surrounding lakes. This paper is intended to provide a springboard for implementation of a future lake / watershed plan for community residents. It addresses what might motivate people to act on recommendations outlined in the plan and what might motivate people to adhere to legislation already in place. Combining marketing strategies greatly improves the probability that the desired behaviour will be observed. Three key areas to focus on in developing a strategy are accessibility of the behaviour, communication, and a social norm surrounding the behaviour. This is much simplified, however these three areas are fundamental to a successful marketing strategy. The easier and clearer the behaviour is to engage in, the more likely it will be observed.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Cottages in Ontario are normally serviced by private on-site septic systems. Coming out of septic inspection studies is the realization that many of the one million septic systems are inadequate because of age, inappropriate design, installation, or use. Current attempts to enforce environmental protection related to septic installations have failed because of ineffective provincial regulations and under-funded septic inspection programs.

This paper draws attention to public and environmental concerns regarding existing defective septic systems and provides a critical analysis of the existing Cottage Pollution Control Program (CPCP). A new cost-effective, economically sound and socially acceptable septic re-inspection program is proposed taking into account the experience gained to date.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Kennisis Lake Planning Committee would like to focus their efforts on bringing the Lake Plan to the attention of cottager owners. This report aims to offer insights on how best to present the package and communicate the information so that it encourages active reading and discussion of the plan within the community. The report also aims to provide methods for optimizing feedback from he residents, as well as offer several strategies for the committee to provide feedback to the community.
The project looks at: 1) existing methodology that can facilitate community engagement with the lake plan, 2) methods that can be used to effectively exchange feedback between a community and a committee, and 3) publication and distribution strategies the committee could use to further the community engagement plan.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Historical settlement patterns of properties surrounding Canning Lake provide evidence to a transition from rural to recreational land-uses. Some research has been conducted into this general phenomenon of land-use changes and has concluded that the shift has lasting impacts on the recreational area in question, as well as the surrounding community. Cottages have traditionally been viewed as a symbol of Canadian identity, and as an opportunity to reconnect with nature and the family, however, a new transition is occurring whereby people are using these vacation or recreational areas as permanent dwellings, increasing the property value by providing all the amenities of a primary residence.
This research was conducted for the Canning Lake Property Owners’ Association in conjunction with the Trent University Geography Department as an honours project satisfying a degree requirement. The research was conducted at the Minden Land Registry Office through the consultation of the Abstract Index of land titles and the appropriate deeds of ownership. A transition from rural to recreational land-use is evident in the 1950s and 1960s with the initial subdivision of lots into individual properties. It has also become clear that there is a second transition beginning in the 1980s and currently underway where land-use is shifting from recreational to residential uses on properties around Canning Lake as more people are using their “cottage” as their primary residence and where a seasonal operation has been converted into year-round habitation. This research can provide insight into the changing land-uses within the Canning Lake and surrounding area.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Cottage Dreams is a unique recovery initiative which offers cancer survivors and their supporters a week stay at a cottage in Ontario that have completed their cancer treatment in the past 9 months. The Cottage Dreams staff desired an evaluation that would provide them with information pertaining to how the program facilitated the healing and recovery process of past participants. Evaluators from Trent University designed an evaluation that would examine the effectiveness of the program, the benefits it offers to participants, and the role of the program within the complementary, integrated care approach to healing and recovery. The evaluation consisted of 32 in-depth, open-ended phone interviews with past program participants. The main findings from the research, which were positive in nature, pertained to aspects of healing and recovery that the week at the cottage afforded visitors. Those aspects of healing and recovery which were identified by participants were: a will to live which entails a change in outlook or perspective, being in an environment which is away from everyday life and cancer, being in a natural setting of wildlife and environment, and having time to make emotional connection with others. Each of these elements is a fundamental component within a complementary, integrated approach to healing and recovery and adheres to the Cottage Dreams objectives.
Included in the report are findings about the program itself, which were also positive. Past participants were appreciative of the non-discriminatory nature of the program, the organization’s professionalism, and many were touched by the generosity of cottage donors and the Cottage Dreams staff. The evaluators feel that Cottage Dreams plays an important role in the cancer healing and recovery process and has positively affected the lives of many cancer survivors and their supporters. Taking the comments of past participants into consideration, recommendations have been formulated for Cottage Dreams to consider for future program changes and direction.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Residents living on the banks of Little Cameron Lake have noticed an increase in cottage development and are concerned about the sustainability of the lake. This community interest will allow for a long-term monitoring program that will be easily replicated and therefore transferable to other areas within the bioregion. This paper gives recommendations to the community for their own water testing and current status of the lake as of 1975 as provided by the MNR.
