Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The paper focuses on the growing and/or foraging of regional plants and the relationship of these activities to the ecological health of an area, one in which the human culture and natural environment are vital and in balance. Beginning with an overview of bioregionalism, the author moves on to take an historical look at interactions with the land in the Haliburton area.

The bulk of the paper reports on the author's interviews with eight community members who are involved in growing and/or foraging natural plants and their philosophies of living on and with the land. A list of regional plants found and used by those interviewed forms an appendix to the paper.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Trent University has an incredible environmental science program, yet only has a few options for service-learning opportunities for students. Designing service-learning courses for Trent University students can help them to gain valuable field skills that many environmental sector employers are looking for, in today's job market. There are many environmental monitoring protocols that could be learned and executed by students, toward a credit at Trent, while also helping communities that have specific environmental monitoring needs gather specific baseline data sets. Many of the necessary monitoring protocols would be suitable for an environmental monitoring fieldwork service-learning course for Trent students. At the same time, students could also assist community organizations by helping them to start their own monitoring or citizen science programs. This report further explores how best to design an environmental monitoring course for Trent University.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Windy Pine Conference Centre is a 25-acre property located on Kushog Lake, north of Minden in the County of Haliburton. The Conference Centre was developed prior to new shoreline ordinances which require a 30m setback on lake-side properties. The combination of near shore development, variable water-levels on Kushog Lake, and naturally thin soils along the rocky shoreline have enabled areas of concerning erosion along the 300m natural shoreline of the Windy Pine Property (Trent University, n.d.). Other possible causes of shoreline erosion may include wave washing and ice movement (MNRF et al , 2011). A previous shoreline inventory was conducted in 2014 through the “Love Your Lake” program. This project would expand on the previous inventory and provide additional recommendations regarding how to best address the problem areas on the site. This report will give final recommendations on the course of action best suited for the shoreline at the Windy Pine Conference Centre.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This research project was provided by the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders to identify if it is feasible to manage an off road vehicle trail network in Highlands East, Haliburton County, Ontario. Two 4th year Trent University students in the Geography Program were enlisted to complete this project. The use of literature reviews, secondary source surveys, in person interviews, and phone interviews were used to identify the feasibility of developing the trail network. The researchers investigated the environmental impacts, social impacts, and economical impacts that could influence the creation of a trail network.

Natural Heritage Areas in Haliburton, Ontario: Provincial Initiatives for Protection
Subject
The topic of the resource
The County of Haliburton is a rich and diverse natural environment, containing a variety of endangered species, representative land forms of natural significance, and spaces vital to ecosystem dynamics. These areas of natural heritage found throughout are crucial to the sustainability and health of the natural and human environment. The protection of these sites can take a number of different forms, both private and public. Such practical concepts as stewardship provide an effective means of private protective management. However, much of Haliburton County is Crown land and thus the responsibility of the Ministry of Natural Resources. This paper looks at public initiatives in Haliburton and methods for improving the process and implementation. Bioregional approaches to planning and management frame suggestions for protection enhancement. The provincial program of Areas of Natural and Scientific Interest is looked at as having the potential to recognize endangered spaces and natural heritage areas but not the management to protect these areas in a bioregion to ensure ecological integrity and maintain biodiversity.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
By considering the history of a portion of the abandoned Victoria Railway between Kinmount and Haliburton Village, the author states his case that there is a connection between the railway line and Haliburton County's search for community development in a bioregional context. From a look at the historical events surrounding the building of the Victoria Railway in the 1870s to the tearing up of the tracks in 1983 and 1984, the author moves on to a discussion of the Rails-to-Trails movement in general, outlining potential benefits associated with such a conversion in Haliburton. Such an initiative is presented in the context of several qualities integral to bioregionalism: the principles of bioregional economies, the actualization of ecological principles through protected spaces, and the regeneration of culture and community.

Haliburton County
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This report looks at the options available for sustainable housing building and renovation projects in Haliburton County, Ontario and residents' perceptions of sustainable housing. The project is based around answering three research questions in reference to Haliburton County. They are 1) What are the options for sustainable housing, 2) How do residents perceive sustainable housing, and 3) What are the similarities and differences between the perceptions of different resident groups.
Data was gathered by reviewing literature on rural geography , sustainable communities and environmentally friendly building. Results determined that there are many environmentally friendly materials for housing construction and renovation, including some locally available options within Haliburton County. This data led to the creation of handbook which will act a reference guide to community members and will be distributed through the local organization Environment Haliburton.
Survey responses were compared between income groups and between permanent and seasonal residents. These comparisons revealed that regardless of income or resident status, cost is the most prevalent deciding factor in residents' choice of whether or not to use environmentally friendly material or alternative energy sources in a construction or renovation project. These include durability and longevity, affordability and environmental impact. Survey responses also expressed concern over the lack of available information about sustainable building options. This revealed a gap in research which the handbook will aid in filling.

Haliburton County
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This resource accompanies the report "Building Green in Haliburton County: Perceptions of Sustainable Housing."

This handbook is an opportunity for you to explore a variety of ‘green’ options for housing renovation and construction projects in Haliburton County. Using environmentally friendly materials, or ‘green building’ as it is commonly known, is a growing practice worldwide.

Haliburton County is the setting of the Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Sir Sanford Fleming College, and so the area has the unique opportunity of having some buildings, built using alternative and environmentally friendly materials, open to the public. There are many advantages to using these materials when doing your next construction and renovation project. By using materials from a local source and alternative sources of energy, you can lighten your load on the environment. By improving the energy efficiency of your home, you can reduce your heating bills and lighten the load on your pocketbook. I hope that you find this handbook useful and informative.

Head Lake, Kashagawigamog Lake
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this paper is to give a general analysis of Head Lake and adjoining Kashagawigamog Lake in terms of the overall lake characteristics and walleye fishery status. Given the recent undertaking of spawning bed creation and enhancement, recommendations were developed in an attempt to start a reliable database that may be implemented in the future to assess the viability of the enhancement work. It is important to note that the given recommendations are strongly empirical as recent lake inventory information was not available, and what information was present was somewhat outdated. The implementation of the recommendations however, will provide a suitable structure for future management goals and analysis of the present day fish stock.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Within the stated definition of bioregionalism, the paper concentrates on the aspects of food production and the capabilities of the land to support agriculture within the Provisional County of Haliburton. Coming out of the author's conversations with farmers Dwayne Wruth and Godfry Tyler, the historical roots of agriculture under the Province of Canada's Free Land Grant policy are explored leading up to present-day mixed farming in the area. The landscape of the Highlands with the predominance of the Precambrian Shield, abundant waterways, and rocky nature is presented as the backdrop to the evolution of agriculture in the area. Conditions leading to changes in farming and the general decline in the area are outlined. The report concludes with suggestions for further research on the topic.
