The project is based around answering three research questions in reference to Haliburton County. They are 1) What are the options for sustainable housing, 2) How do residents perceive sustainable housing, and 3) What are the similarities and differences between the perceptions of different resident groups.
Data was gathered by reviewing literature on rural geography , sustainable communities and environmentally friendly building. Results determined that there are many environmentally friendly materials for housing construction and renovation, including some locally available options within Haliburton County. This data led to the creation of handbook which will act a reference guide to community members and will be distributed through the local organization Environment Haliburton.
Survey responses were compared between income groups and between permanent and seasonal residents. These comparisons revealed that regardless of income or resident status, cost is the most prevalent deciding factor in residents' choice of whether or not to use environmentally friendly material or alternative energy sources in a construction or renovation project. These include durability and longevity, affordability and environmental impact. Survey responses also expressed concern over the lack of available information about sustainable building options. This revealed a gap in research which the handbook will aid in filling. This handbook is an opportunity for you to explore a variety of ‘green’ options for housing renovation and construction projects in Haliburton County. Using environmentally friendly materials, or ‘green building’ as it is commonly known, is a growing practice worldwide.
Haliburton County is the setting of the Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Sir Sanford Fleming College, and so the area has the unique opportunity of having some buildings, built using alternative and environmentally friendly materials, open to the public. There are many advantages to using these materials when doing your next construction and renovation project. By using materials from a local source and alternative sources of energy, you can lighten your load on the environment. By improving the energy efficiency of your home, you can reduce your heating bills and lighten the load on your pocketbook. I hope that you find this handbook useful and informative.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"construction,environment,Environment Studies,green building,housing",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/13d40d8fd7fca02ac86c8255d900d37c.pdf,,"Trent University - Community Based Research",1,0

It includes some analysis specific to Haliburton.","This essay argues that Canadian social policy has historically affected women’s lives in a detrimental manner and continues to affect women’s access to affordable housing. Specifically, the roles of age, socioeconomic status, and geographical location in dictating women’s interactions with government housing policies are discussed. The evolution of the welfare state was critical to the development and shaping of housing policies, and in initiating both positive and negative change in women’s lives. These ideas are discussed in conjunction with a case study of Haliburton County, Ontario, and connected to overarching themes and policies that affect Ontario women as a whole. This case study of Haliburton provides an in depth examination of a specific group of women’s experiences and issues with housing. This section of the essay focuses on single women, ages 45-64 living in the rural context of Haliburton County in order to demonstrate a specific group that is most in need of consideration in housing policy changes. Also mentioned are some housing movements in Ontario and Haliburton that are attempting to bring attention to women’s housing shortages.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"housing,Social and Health Studies,social issues,women",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/45ae63b831dbd99982f5411f93ca671c.pdf,,"Trent University - Community Based Research",1,0

Hosted by the Township of Minden Hills (Emily Stonehouse) and supervised by IDST faculty Derya Terhan, students gathered and analyzed data from their literature review, a 2019 local community consultation, an online survey and several telephone surveys.
This report was designed to equip the Township of Minden Hills with a foundation for up-to-date research and to suggest initiatives as support for change.
Highlights from the Study:
· The top four factors for the study participants in deciding where to live were Employment, Family Ties, the Physical Environment and Housing;
· 59% of participants felt engaged in the community of Minden Hills and the largest group within that (46%), only felt somewhat engaged;
· Leaving their community to go to high school in Haliburton means young adults in other townships may start feeling disconnected from an early age;
· Recreational programming for young adults was seen as limited, and often geared towards the senior population and during working hours;
· A shortage of evening entertainment activities led to feelings of isolation;
· There is a lack of formal support systems for youth employment in the County;
· Increased internet access was identified by several survey participants in the open-ended questions - as “what is important to this age group is the ability to network easily”;
· While literature findings did not find it to be a significant factor in attracting young adults, study participants felt as though Minden Hill’s natural beauty and rural location had a positive influence in their decision where to live.
