Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The title of this paper refers to four works written and compiled by women who have lived in the Haliburton area. The author presents a bioregional perspective on all four books hoping that the reader will gain a "sense of place" as presented by the writers, Elizabeth Maude Finlay, Gertrude LeRoy Miller, Doris McCarthy, and the anecdotal stories compiled by students of Haliburton Highlands Secondary School. The common theme in the writings is an insight into the relationship of the authors to their community and the relationship of themselves and the community to the land. Each work is analyzed around several broad categories; stories about the area, sense of community, work, play, and attitudes towards the land.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The main premise of this research paper deals with the history of the property from when it was first purchased to what it is used for currently. Windy Pine is a beautiful 24-acre property located on Kushog Lake just north of Minden in the County of Haliburton. It was purchased around 1939 by Mary Northway and Flora Morrison to be used as a summer canoe trip camp for young women. Through property exploration, archival research and many interviews, a detailed history has been conducted about the property.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Historical settlement patterns of properties surrounding Canning Lake provide evidence to a transition from rural to recreational land-uses. Some research has been conducted into this general phenomenon of land-use changes and has concluded that the shift has lasting impacts on the recreational area in question, as well as the surrounding community. Cottages have traditionally been viewed as a symbol of Canadian identity, and as an opportunity to reconnect with nature and the family, however, a new transition is occurring whereby people are using these vacation or recreational areas as permanent dwellings, increasing the property value by providing all the amenities of a primary residence.
This research was conducted for the Canning Lake Property Owners’ Association in conjunction with the Trent University Geography Department as an honours project satisfying a degree requirement. The research was conducted at the Minden Land Registry Office through the consultation of the Abstract Index of land titles and the appropriate deeds of ownership. A transition from rural to recreational land-use is evident in the 1950s and 1960s with the initial subdivision of lots into individual properties. It has also become clear that there is a second transition beginning in the 1980s and currently underway where land-use is shifting from recreational to residential uses on properties around Canning Lake as more people are using their “cottage” as their primary residence and where a seasonal operation has been converted into year-round habitation. This research can provide insight into the changing land-uses within the Canning Lake and surrounding area.

Description
An account of the resource
This project is focused on the potential for creating a mechanism for reviewing and advocating for heritage buildings in rural communities. It aims to answer the questions: What are heritage committees? How are they formed? What are the approaches that have been successful in preserving local heritage? What recommendations are there in relation to issues being faced by the host community?
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This project investigates the process of establishing a municipal heritage committee (MHC) and tries to apply the findings to Minden Hills. Currently the Ontario government supplies a lot of information on how to create a municipal heritage committee but does not go beyond policy recommendations. This project seeks out specific recommendations for Minden Hills in establishing and maintaining a successful, effective, and long lasting organization. The project uses a mixed methods approach to investigation. A literature and policy review reveals that open lines of communication between committee and council is vital and can be achieved by having a council member sit on the committee. Also, having a council member sit on the committee helps to ensure a positive relationship between committee and council and is another major asset to maintaining a successful municipal heritage committee. By categorizing and sorting the municipal heritage committees of Ontario, the importance of a concise, well-defined, and accurately reflecting name becomes evident. This should help people understand what the municipal heritage committee does at a glance and with little contemplation. Through personal observation and information provided by the Minden Hills Heritage Walking tour, the region should be taken seriously as a heritage community. Proper representation of the community’s heritage can be achieved through a municipal heritage committee. Finally, interviews with existing municipal heritage committee representatives confirm that communication between council and committee, and ultimately the community, is one of the most effective means to a successful and long lasting municipal heritage committee. Some difficulty came when trying to recruit interviewees from existing MHCs. This resulted in candidates apart from my first choice. Though disheartening, this did not impact the project significantly since the main focus of the 5 interviews was to gain evidence of both successful and unsuccessful MHC stories in order to refine the recommendations made to Minden Hills. The interviews conducted during this project produced some valuable information. The main points emerging from the interviews are 1) that a MHC must co-operate with Council and not opposed to it, 2) that clear flowing communication between MHC, Council and the Community is maintained, and 3) that support from the community and Council is essential in the establishment of a MHC

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Born in 1902, Ethel Curry lived a rich and productive life as an artist with much of her subject matter being influenced by her love of the Haliburton area and the forest in particular. This paper presents a detailed biographical picture of Ethel Curry, concentrating on her "sense of place", an important aspect of bioregional theory. The main aspects of bioregional theory are explored with reference to the life and work of Curry as well as that of other artists.

Gooderham
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The "Settlement History of Gooderham," is a project residents felt was important to capture the memories of older citizens in order to preserve the information. Information was collected from interviews and literature review. The basic results of this study reflect the physical and social changes, which have happened in Gooderham since it's establishment in 1873. When it was first settled, Gooderham, was mainly supported by a resource-based economy including lumbering and agriculture. As the economy grew stronger, the settlers were able to improve roads. Eventually the resource-based economy became a service based one, as tourism and cottager entered the area. Now, the Gooderham School is closing but the town still has a busy summer season. This history is explored in more detail in this report, with a focus on the settlement patterns along Gooderham's roadways.
The report also makes recommendation for follow-up student and community projects to continue this work.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This paper looks at three museums in Haliburton County, (the Haliburton County Museum, the Minden County Museum, and the Wilberforce Red Cross Outpost Museum), in the context of their history and what they offer to the community. It proposes that museums play an important part within the framework of bioregionalism in raising the consciousness of a community to its locale or region or life place.

As a preface to an in-depth look at the three area museums, the paper outlines the evolution of museums as an expression of community from Greek and Roman times to the present. It goes on to describe the three museums in terms of their history, collections, management, programming, and some of the problems they are facing. Suggestions for an enhanced role to be played by community musuems are presented along with possibilities for future research.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The early twentieth century saw the pulp and paper industry rise to leading significance in Canada. This paper looks at some of the contributing factors to this rise in importance and specifically, at the major pulp and paper companies operating in the Haliburton area at the time. The coming of the Depression in the 1930s had a profound effect on this industry and the story of these companies is followed as they attempted to weather the difficult economic times. Life for the men employed by the logging camps and mills as well as their families is described. Several make-work projects, which rose up to help with the economic situation, are cited as examples of the community support network which emerged in this troubled time.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

The Gull River is a major river system in Haliburton County made up of three chains of rivers and lakes merging at Boshkung Lake. The author presents an overview of various attitudes towards the land and the way these perceptions altered the river over time. The major part of the paper details the development of the Minden Wild Water Reserve on the Gull River north of Minden Lake, which provides "world class white water" many months of the year. Concluding thoughts on whether these changes reflect positive or negative attitudes round out the discussion.

Gooderham
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
When considering how land has been developed in rural communities of Southern Ontario it is important to consider all of the different social and economic factors that have led to the unique growth each area. The research within this report highlights there factors and is specific to one small hamlet in Haliburton County. The hamlet in the study is Gooderham, which, like many other small rural hamlets, originally developed because of the resource industry. The extraction of resources created a need for services because of the large number of people the industry employed. The services tended to develop in areas that had the most appropriate physical features and in areas that were close to the resource extraction sites. Gooderham developed in Glamorgan township along the Monck road towards the end of the 19th century. It grew just south of Pine Lake because of a great location for a water powered mill. The research examines how Gooderham has changed to a service based economy from it's early days as a resources based economy. Gooderham provided many services during the resources extraction time period but the services that developed were geared towards a resource based economy. Today, the residents of Gooderham no longer rely on the same services. Today, cottagers, commuters, and retirees make up the population of Gooderham and modern services include home renovation, communications (phone, internet), road works, plumbing, electrical, heating, contracted service work, home building companies, etc. Many of these services are non-local but still contribute a great deal to the economy of Gooderham. When examining this report the reader will be taken through a detailed history of the area with an emphasis on how, where, and why the land was developed the way that it did in the hamlet of Gooderham.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this project is to create a comprehensive inventory of cultural sites in Highlands East and map that information to make it more accessible to the public. The intention is also to provide an easy reference for staff and visitors to learn about the history of the municipality and to bring archival research to life in the form of a map. This material will be used as a basis for developing the cultural assets in the municipality for the development of tourism and economic growth. The project researches the Highlands East area and provides detailed information collected via archival research of tangible cultural sites and resources. The community will decide which sites it wishes to expand on in the second stage, again to strengthen the development of tourism and economic growth in Highlands East. This project is the first stage of a cultural mapping and inventory plan of the Municipality of Highlands East that will develop on the strengths of the community based upon cultural sites and local history. This project identified cultural sites in the municipality and includes a literature review about tourism development in rural areas. The inventory of sites includes brief historical information about the site coupled with cartographic information from Google Maps. Also included in the conclusions are recommendations for future development of the Highlands East cultural mapping projects and its outliers. Generations of families have lived in Highlands East. Older inhabitants of Highlands East carry stories that bring richness to the community. By combining cultural interests, adventure tourism interests, and eco-tourism development together, Highlands East can create a stronger community by reaching its full potential in tourism and economic growth. This second stage in the project is a move towards this goal.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The works of Canadian artist Andre Lapine grace many art collections in Canada. There is praise for both his beautiful works as well as his gentle and pleasant demeanor. Pearl McCarthy, a journalist and art critic based in Toronto, referred to Lapine as the Gentle Cavalier. It was a name that stuck and would follow him throughout his life and after his death. It has now been half a century since his death yet he is still discussed with great admiration in many art circles today. In his life, he spent very little time out of the discussion of the media.

The legacy that Andre Lapine left behind was seemingly awe-inspiring. During the twenty years or so that he spent traveling Europe he finished a known 50 paintings. The sheer number of paintings he produced while living in Canada far exceeds that number. Most of his works remain in the hands of private owners. The largest public collection resides at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery in Minden, Ontario. The late Frank Welch donated forty-nine works in all, most of which are oil landscapes. This paper gives a vivid description of the life and works of Andre Lapine.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
During the late 19th century, Minden's main street had enough diverse shops to satisfy the needs of any consumer, a trait that still exists today. This project explores the values embedded in the history of main street Minden so that they can be applied to the present day in order to maintain the character of the street and the bond between people and community. The purpose of this project, proposed by the County Town Museum, was to provide the museum with a chronological catalogue of the owners and businesses on Minden's main street between 1860 and 1920.

Not much research has been done on Main Street in this time period, which by many accounts has been regarded as Minden's heyday. The small business district along Main Street occupies the length of approximately one city block and is bordered by natural features at each end. It is a primary place of business and therefore, acts as the town's central meeting place. This is a good way to establish a connection to a particular place and build communities; at the same time our needs are met without placing an unnecessarily heavy burden on the land.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The closure of the Donald Chemical Plant in 1946 signified the end of an industry which, in its heyday, employed directly and indirectly between three and four hundred people. This paper traces the history of the "Chemical" as it is often referred to by long-time residents, and its effects on the local landscape, both human and natural.

Beginning with a detailed account of Canadian industrialization from the time of Confederation through the mid 1900s the report moves to a history of the plant at Donald. The plant began producing charcoal and moved into the manufacture of by-products such as acetate and wood alcohol as it responded to demand from southern markets and closed when new petrochemical related processes made its work redundant. Its development is outlined in the context of the inter-relatedness of the factory, its products, the process, the community, and the natural environment.

Willow Beach
Description
An account of the resource
This paper follows a small plot of land in the Haliburton Highlands from its use as a camping site for Algonquin Indians in the years prior to 1850, to a cottage resort in 2003.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Drawing on the strengths of both History and Geography, a settlement history of the Willow Beach property has been compiled. To reconstruct the past events occuring at Willow Beach as series of interviews, archival research and literature reviews have been drawn upon. Using multiple forms of qualitative research and analysis, the cultural landscape of Willow Beach has been recreated using a series of thematic maps. However, the complexity of the cognitive image can not be entirely captured within a thematic map or series of maps. To compensate for this potential loss of meaning during the transformation of information to maps, a chronological "story" has been produced to accompany the map series.

This settlement history follows a small plot of land in the Haliburton Highlands from its use as a camping site for Algonquin Indians in the years prior to 1850, to a cottage resort in 2003. During this 153-yer period, the cultural landscape of this lot has changed a great deal. Moving from a wilderness in every semse of the word, to open farmland, to a resort where the wilderness is slowly moving back onto the lot, although a much more "tamed" version of wilderness. Through all the physical and cultural changes that have occured on this small plot of land on the shores of Lake Kashagawigamog one characteristic has remained: the nature of hospitality th owners have all shown, and the pride they take in sharing the beautiful Haliburton County with others.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the foundations of the bioregionalism course at Trent University. It will be argued that the relationships are in fact disaporic philosophies reaching into the heart of bioregionalism course divergent from the "experience of place", of one small piece of property (24 acres), Windy Pine, that was bequeathed to Trent University in 1982. By researching primary and secondary sources, a holistic representation of the historical context of the property was constructed.
