Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve has a long history of snowmobiling and relies heavily on the income that this activity brings in during the winter months. Because of this, it is probably not feasible to immediately end snowmobiling within Haliburton Forest if in fact the machine's impact is significant. For this reason, recommendations made in literary papers have been collected to help lessen the potential impact of snowmobiling on wildlife within Haliburton Forest. The effects of noise on ungulates, subnivean mammals, predators, fish, and wildlife in general has been collected from various sources and summarized in this research paper. Recommendations have also been made for measuring noise emissions in Haliburton Forest.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The issue of portages on private property is of increasing concern to canoeists. The lack of value for canoe routes, and their historical significance, has lead to issues such as that of accessing private property by the public. On one side those that abuse the privilege of enjoying the natural environment of a canoe route do not value the land that they use.<br /><br />Similarly those that demand ownership of the land and deny access to other humans are not contributing to the complex interactions that are formed with these natural landscapes. This issue is examined through case studies and examples.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This atlas groups the park properties of the amalgamated Township of Minden Hills, by which Township they are in. The 5 townships are: Anson, Hindon, Lutterworth, Minden and Snowdon. The maps themselves give the park location , the access point, the
location of the facilities present and some of the park attractions. The 10 park properties included in this atlas are: Bisset Beach, Furnace Falls, Herrington Park (Whitewater Park), Ingoldsby Ball Diamond, Lochlin Community Center, Lutterworth Park, the Minden Fairgrounds, Panorama Park, the Village Green and Rotary Park. There is also a location map for Snowdon Park and the Newcastle Street Parkette. Twelve Mile Beach is the only park not included.
At the end of this atlas there is an appendix which includes the original maps constructed by Jesse Lougheed, and some other useful resources.

Description
An account of the resource
Paper provides background information to aid in decision-making about the incorporation of art on local trails systems, and to help initiate a partnership between Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network and the Arts Community.
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
As the primary host for this project, Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network expressed interest in determining potential ways of incorporating art on trails in Haliburton County. As a result, this paper aims to provide general background information to help the program committee make informed, specific decisions regarding the incorporation of art on local trails systems and help initiate a partnership between Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network and the Arts community. The primary question posed was, “What is the potential for incorporating art on trails in Haliburton County?” with the following sub-questions: What other communities have incorporated art on trails? What is the potential for having art on trails in Haliburton County in terms of pre-existing or potential attributes in the area? What are some of the potential benefits and challenges of having art on trails?
Research findings show that there are many communities that have incorporated art on trails and that it remains a more recent phenomenon for larger project scales. There also proves to be limited available resources and information surrounding the success and challenges that these communities have faced while initiating the projects. As illustrated within this paper, Haliburton County has extensive trails systems, a substantial art community, a good start to the networking needed to make such a venture possible and a successful example of the incorporation of art on trails in their very own community.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This report answers the question: What are the best practices for the trail organizations? Haliburton highlands Trails and Tours wants to know what the best practices other trail organizations are using to manage their trails by using volunteers. Volunteers play an important role in non profit organizations and are of great value to these organizations. Therefore it is of great importance that Haliburton Highlands has an effective volunteer management process and will be a useful tool in developing and will be a useful tool in developing the organizations volunteer policies. Key areas discussed are how to reward and recognize volunteers. The purpose of this is to develop the volunteer system so that it will contribute to trail management at Trails and Tours.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Historical settlement patterns of properties surrounding Canning Lake provide evidence to a transition from rural to recreational land-uses. Some research has been conducted into this general phenomenon of land-use changes and has concluded that the shift has lasting impacts on the recreational area in question, as well as the surrounding community. Cottages have traditionally been viewed as a symbol of Canadian identity, and as an opportunity to reconnect with nature and the family, however, a new transition is occurring whereby people are using these vacation or recreational areas as permanent dwellings, increasing the property value by providing all the amenities of a primary residence.
This research was conducted for the Canning Lake Property Owners’ Association in conjunction with the Trent University Geography Department as an honours project satisfying a degree requirement. The research was conducted at the Minden Land Registry Office through the consultation of the Abstract Index of land titles and the appropriate deeds of ownership. A transition from rural to recreational land-use is evident in the 1950s and 1960s with the initial subdivision of lots into individual properties. It has also become clear that there is a second transition beginning in the 1980s and currently underway where land-use is shifting from recreational to residential uses on properties around Canning Lake as more people are using their “cottage” as their primary residence and where a seasonal operation has been converted into year-round habitation. This research can provide insight into the changing land-uses within the Canning Lake and surrounding area.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This paper explores the potential and current state of cycling in Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada and was completed for both the Haliburton Highlands Cycling Coalition and the Trent University Geography Department in conjunction with U-Links Centre for Community Based Research. Survey data collected for this project show that there is a large interest in cycling in Haliburton, however, concerns over traffic, safety, and road conditions prevent more residents from cycling. Respondents consisted mainly of full-time residents of Haliburton County probably because respondents were recruited at grocery stores during the winter months – spatially and seasonally uncharacteristic of Haliburton’s primary tourists – cottagers. Data shows a high potential for cyclo-tourism as an overwhelming majority of respondents reported that they enjoyed the scenery and environment of cycling in Haliburton County. While Haliburton exhibits a model-share consistent with most of North America – that is very low compared to European model-shares – Haliburton’s model-share is likely to improve if on and off-road infrastructure is enhanced.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Episodic acidification events have been found to occur in fresh water lakes throughout North-eastern Cananda and the United States. In Ontario specifically, these events occur north of the Precambrian Shields southern boundary in a region that contains the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve Ltd. The determination of timing of specific events is difficult because of the ubiquitous nature of the event itself. Modelling of hydrographs and the acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) of the surface water, is suggested by some researchers as a method of predicting timing and duration of these events. <br /><br />The majority of policy created to deal with these episodic acidification events has been based on research concerning the deposition of anthropogenic sulfates and nitrates. However, this study suggests that point source emissions from snowmobiles can also contribute to sulfate concentrations in the snow pack that may elevate the intensity of the acidification events during the spring thaw. Critical loads were calculated for the study lakes in the Haliburton Forests and Wildlife Reserve Ltd. using the Steady-State Water Chemistry Model. From these calculations and the analysis of snow samples it was determined that current inputs of acidifying compounds have concentrations just below the critical limits for biota in the lakes. It is therefore suggested that the number of snowmobile trail passes sold per day remain at 100 and trails across lakes be limited where possible. It is also recommended that further study take place on an increased number of lakes to determine differences in acid sensitivity and critical loads, while monitoring of both deposition and point source emissions continue.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The effects of snowmobiling on terrestrial vegetation have indirect consequences on associated wildlife within an ecosystem. Impacts on primary producers are made manifest in cascading effects throughout the food web. These effects are implied on wildlife through changes in habitat or home range of wildlife. Various plant communities support a diverse range of different animals. Rapid alterations in composition or density of these communities could result in indeterminate upsets in wildlife populations. Snowmobiling has four main effects on terrestrial vegetation depicted through direct effects, resulting from mechanical damage and pollutants incurred from the snowmobile, and indirect effects, caused by snow compaction and alterations in soil.
Result highlight: less recognized within the variety of organisms that occupy an ecosystem are subnivean mammals. These are small mammals such as rodents, shrews, squirrels and voles that inhabit the sub layer of snow during cold months through underground tunneling and nesting. Concern arises as alterations to the habitat occur when passage of a snowmobile causes the snow to compact sufficiently to impose stress.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this paper is to give a general analysis of Head Lake and adjoining Kashagawigamog Lake in terms of the overall lake characteristics and walleye fishery status. Given the recent undertaking of spawning bed creation and enhancement, recommendations were developed in an attempt to start a reliable database that may be implemented in the future to assess the viability of the enhancement work. It is important to note that the given recommendations are strongly empirical as recent lake inventory information was not available, and what information was present was somewhat outdated. The implementation of the recommendations however, will provide a suitable structure for future management goals and analysis of the present day fish stock.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Victoria Railway line from Lindsay to Haliburton was decommissioned as a rail line in the 1980s and began a new life as a recreational rail trail. Today’s Haliburton County rail trail spans 34 kms from Kinmount to Haliburton Village. This report discusses making improvements to the Rail Trail for environmental sustainability, health, tourism, and associated community development in Haliburton, while also documenting the ‘value’ the existing trail brings to the community. Some potential improvements include proper signage, improving the trail surfacing to be more accessible, as well as promoting the trail in the community and planning for a safe multi-use environment.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The intention of this report was to investigate the nature of dedicated angler programs across North America. A dedicated angler program is considered any program that facilitates angler or community involvement in the management of the fisheries resource. Programs were analyzed from across Canada and the northern United States in an effort to understand how a dedicated angler program could be introduced to Haliburton County. Programs involving stocking, habitat restoration, education, reporting, creel studies, and angler diaries were reviewed. Trends that may be indicative of success throughout these programs were analyzed and compiled. A select number of programs were then introduced to an invited audience at the Haliburton Highlands Outdoors Association fish hatchery in Haliburton County. The invited audience included HHOA members, employees with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, members of the local stewardship council, and lake association members. Programs that had potential for Haliburton County were presented, along with findings detailing the nature of communitygovernment manager partnerships and creation and funding of a natural resource comanagement program. At this time a survey was provided to gain feedback from the invited audience, and a discussion period was opened. This report analyzes the information gained from both the background research into dedicated angler programs across North America and from the hatchery information session. Recommendations are made regarding how Haliburton County should proceed with such a program.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In 2004, the Kennisis Lake Cottage Owners Association (KLCOA) decided to approve the creation of a lake plan in order to identify issues and develop solutions to help maintain the overall health and safety of Kennisis Lake. According to that lake plan, one area of concern includes Friendly Boating Practices on the Kennisis Lakes, and a boating code of conduct. This project identifies the environmental issues related to the use of personal water crafts, recommendations on how to avoid causing these issues, and management options viable for Kennisis Lake.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This research report was conducted due to the increased demand for economic impact studies in order to further promote the development of trails. To do this, there is an increasing need to attach an economic value to recreational activities such as hiking, giving the activity an economic benefit resulting from the development of trails. There is a need to know about trail users and their expenditures in order to justify spending, and to further promote trails. This will assist in demonstrating the beneficial value of trails and the contribution to community economic development. This will be done by consulting existing economic impact studies and investigating other trail organizations to determine best methods for tracking and reporting on the economic impact of trail users. The study objectives are to provide a system on gathering information on the number of trail users, to determine trail user profile and the average money spent by trail users, and to determine the multiplier effect by estimating the economic benefits due to the existence and use of the trail users.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This organization is a single-purpose group whose mandate is to recommend the composition, location, and a feasible initial and ongoing financial support structure for a community owned and operated pool for the County of Haliburton. The questions that were the most important were those pertaining to the usage of a pool facility if one were built and those that were designed to establish if there was, in fact, a market for a pool. <br /><br />The project is comprised of four distinct components; the first being the database design, the second being data entry, and the third being preliminary analysis of the data entered and the drawing of conclusions from the results. The fourth component to the project is a summary of the expected benefits to the surrounding area.
