In 1979, Steve Van Matre of the Institute for Earth Education (IEE), developed a curriculum titled Sunship Earth, a program based on the seven ecological principles that make up our world: energy, cycles, diversity, community, interrelationships, change, and adaptation. The program is dedicated to broadening an understanding of the place in which we live and this paper focuses on Camp Wanakita and its application of the ideas within its camping program. Wanakita is a Hamilton-Burlington YMCA camp located on Koshlong Lake and the role of the YMCA, its philosophy, and that of camping in general is described as a preface to the paper. Abstract A summary of the resource. In developing questions for an Envirothon, several important tasks were undertaken to grasp a full understanding of the competition. First, related literatures were found in order to discover what research had been done, and what areas were in need of more insight. Articles on classroom competition, ethics of pressured environments, urban issue domination, as well as thought pattern classification are researched and discussed. This paper also outlines the important methods that were used to collect valuable secondary and archival data such as sample questions, study packages and student curriculum lessons. The analysis procedures such as organization and categorizing questions into different styles and formats (i.e. easy vs. hard, multiple choice, true/false or fill in the blank), as well as colour coding, careful reading, and counting are discussed in detail. Also included is an in-depth presentation of my research findings. This section outlines how question styles tend to be at an advanced level, formats were generally distributed evenly, and how most sets satisfied Bloom’s taxonomical classification system. Also discussed is a comprehensive analysis on how this research project can be applied to the real world, such as in classrooms, occupational environments, or Envirothons yet to come. A brief summary concludes the project with an overview on what areas surrounding the Envirothon require further research. Abstract A summary of the resource. Currently, a focus on the loss of habitat, filling of wetlands, and the contamination of watersheds, are considered priority in the Ontario curriculum. By identifying valued educational benefits and promoting linkages to existing curriculum, the Haliburton community will benefit through the recognition and utilization of the Haliburton fish hatchery facility. To fully undertake this research project, several steps were required to encapsulate the creation of the required curriculum. Research into the processes, policy, and overall creation of constructed wetlands was needed to ensure that the proper education could be conducted. Upon learning the fundamentals, review of previous research and lesson plans had been conducted. Contact with local public teachers was done in order to fully assess their objectives and goals for the lesson plans. A tour of the local fish hatchery took place to determine what is expected of the school tours. The goal for this project was to undertake new curriculum development for grades four and eight, with an emphasis on the geography curriculum. This curriculum is centred on a tour to the Haliburton Hatchery. As well, the host requested a revising and enhancing of the existing lesson plan for Grade 10 Academic Science. Beginning with a look at the set of purposes for Ontario schools delineated in the 1994 Ontario Royal Commission on Learning, the author moves to the area of the relationship of schools and community in attaining some of these goals through community service learning. The effectiveness of such programs in achieving civic awareness and creating responsible citizens is discussed. The intent of this project was to create an education package about the Donald Chemical Plant, a charcoal plant active in Haliburton County in the early 1900s and unused since the 1940s. The paper explores bioregional education in the context of Haliburton as a backdrop to the development of the educational unit itself. The creation of the package is outlined along with curriculum activities for use in two grade 8 classes at Archie Stouffer Elementary School. Evaluations both from a student and teacher perspective are included as well as suggestions for future education initiatives.
