Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park has reported over 15,500 metres of trails that have been degraded to some degree from prior all-terrain vehicle use. These trails have experienced soil erosion, with additional impacts potentially including soil compaction and declines in vegetative health. Proposed remediation strategies include mulching, tillage, planting native vegetation, decreasing trail traffic, and creating an invasive species management plan. The level of degradation on the trails was completed using visual analysis conducted by a park ranger, which overall lacks objectivity. Creating a more standardized classification system for the park is highly suggested, as well as a re-evaluation of trail degradation. Templates for trail assessments are included that can be adapted to the needs of the Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park, as well as some recommended strategies for trail remediation based on a literature analysis.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Abbey Gardens plan to create a new trail through their property and was interested in the creation of trail signage that encouraged visitors to learn about and engage with nature. This report includes the 5 signs proposed by the student research team, as well as background info that can be accessed by the community or used by Abbey Gardens during any guided visits to enrich the experience. The first sign is welcome sign and points out some key plant and animal species on the trail. The second sign focuses on how nature changes with the seasons and the accompanying report section goes into detail about the tree species on the trail and their seasonal patterns. The third sign focuses on mindfulness in nature and provides several activities to connect with and observe the nature around you. The fourth sign is all about beavers and how the behave through the seasons. The fifth and final sign is centred on a variety of species of woodpeckers you may be lucky enough to see at Abbey Gardens and how to tell them apart.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Abbey gardens is interested in exploring the potential for a garden tourism project on their property. Garden tourism is defined as a type of tourism that involves travelling away from one’s home to spend time/money in an area designated for horticulture by the property owner. Tourists visit gardens of cultural, historical, or educational significance, as well as gardens with events and programming (e.g. shows and festivals). A study from the mid-2000s found that over 3 million Canadians participated in garden tourism that year as part of a multi-day vacation. This report looks at other Canadian garden tourism operation that may be comparable to what Abbey Gardens is envisioning for their property, including: Plant Paradise Country Gardens in Caledon, Ontario; Landman Gardens and Bakery in Grand Valley, Ontario; Whistling Gardens in Wilsonville, Ontario; Redford Gardens in Grand Metis, Quebec; Edward Gardens in Toronto, Ontario; and, Coventry Gardens in Windsor, Ontario. The features deemed most suitable for consideration for Abbey Gardens to include in any tourism garden plans (besides plants of course!) include an outdoor venues space that could be used for live music and other events, and a rockery garden area.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The following project contains detailed information on 5 grasses, 5 sedges, and 5 forb species. This includes the native plant species use in shoreline restoration. This document contains a separate section on general information about native plant species and associated wildlife and benefits of planting native vegetation. Furthermore in the interest of respecting other local businesses (other local native plant nurseries) a section was dedicated to making sure our species presented to the host organization, Abbey Gardens, were not duplications of what was already being provided by the other local establishments. The final two sections include suggestions for improving tourism at Abbey Gardens as well as recommendations for next steps.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Haliburton Highlands Guild of Fine Arts is a community volunteer organization, affiliated with the Haliburton Highlands School of Fine Arts, whose work has created a cultural center in the region drawing people to the School and the Guild. The mandate of this paper was to produce an orientation package for the Guild that would be used to attract new members and aid new and present members in becoming more familiar with Guild activities.

The history of art and craft in the Haliburton Highlands from native times through early settlement days is presented as a backdrop to work on the actual orientation package. Information about the Guild was attained through primary research and is organized under the following headings: 1) the history of the Guild and Rails End Gallery 2) financial structure of the Guild and 3) the role of the Guild in the community and its relationship to Sir Sandford Fleming College's School of Fine Arts and the Municipality of Dysart et al. The finished product is included as an appendix to the paper.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Tourism and recreation continue to grow in importance in Haliburton County and the development of a system of trails, both land and water, has become a major part of this incentive. This paper examines the state of prominent trails and trail associations in Haliburton County within the context of trail-related issues as identified in the Ontario Trails Council Final Report of 1977, concentrating on four of the seven issues of major concern; trail stability, occupier's liability, user compatibility, and trail maintenance and development funding. The history of the Haliburton Trails Network Strategy, being developed at the time of writing, is outlined with suggestions as to how some of these issues might be addressed in this strategy.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

Recognizing that there has been a growth in demand for Haliburton as a popular tourist area and that this results in some positive economic implications as well as posing some environmental, social, and economic problems, the author suggests that there is a need for proactive management strategies to cope with such growth. The vision of a bioregional analysis of the relationship between tourism and the geography of the area is put forth as the most desirable way to manage this complex issue.

Such expansion in tourism took place at an earlier date in Muskoka, and by comparing the development of tourism in Muskoka with that of Haliburton, the paper presents similarities in expansion and points out some of the environmental pitfalls that might be avoided with careful management. Community efforts are underway to promote Haliburton as a year-round spot to visit and this would help reduce the negative impacts of seasonal economies. Constraints on tourism and land use conflicts with respect to cottagers as well as environmental concerns are studied. The paper concludes with a look at tourism potential in upcoming years.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
While elusive, piecing together this environmental history is of utmost importance for a variety of reasons. On a most basic level, the historical record of Haliburton is hardly complete without an understanding of the environmental changes that occurred in the region. More importantly, developing an understanding of environmental history can provide useful information from which to create tourism and educational opportunities. Perhaps most essentially, an understanding of the environmental history of Haliburton can educate residents about the mistakes of the past so that history does not repeat itself. Hopefully, by examining the impacts incurred by development in the past, we can better understand the impact of our current practices, and make progress towards an environmentally respectful community.

Winner of Canadian Studies Award

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Many people argue that all recreation activities influence the environment whether they are mechanized or not. At Haliburton Forest, more than one leisure group frequently uses all trails within the forest. This makes it exceedingly difficult to assess the impacts created by each activity. The activities of off-road vehicles, especially the snowmobile purists, are now generating much publicity, most of it adverse. This report looks at the environmental impact of snowmobiling specifically with respect to noise levels and engine emissions. It also looks at the many cases of recreational conflict arising from clashes between recreations involving mechanized transport and those who practice the traditional non-mechanized pursuits.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Haliburton County is a destination area for many types of outdoor recreation activities and residents and tourists engaging in these activities have an economic impact on the area. The purpose of this project is to gain an understanding of the relative economic impact of a number of different activities including; snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. The project includes secondary research on economic impact studies done in other areas and an overview of methods used to collect data. Students then developed a survey tool and conducted a pilot study focusing on winter activities. Finally the students refined a survey tool and developed a long-term implementation plan (to be initiated in the spring of 2009) for the collection of economic data on people participating in the outdoor activities listed above.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.

The paper outlines the history of the Dorset Tower from its conception in 1922 through its 1997 season. Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This project examines the history of the Sunny Rock Lodge Bed and Breakfast building and the surrounding property, located on the Burnt River and Canning Lake in Snowdon Township. The lodge has a rich and diverse history associated with the Finnish immigrants who developed their summer cottage on the river into a year-round resort called the Sunny Rock Villa.

This project examines the history of outdoor recreation in Southern Ontario, the history of Finnish immigration to Toronto, Ontario, and the history of the Lodge building and the people who have been associated with it from 1927 to the present. Archival research and personal interviews were conducted in order to collect numerous fragments of the Lodge's colourful past. The development around the Sunny Rock property also spawned an entire community of Finnish immigrants who flocked to the area and attempted to recreate there what it reminded them of in their native Finland. Some aspects of the Finnish village are examined here.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The purpose of this project is to examine the issue of providing a southern access road into Algonquin Provincial Park and to determine if there is a perceived need by the Haliburton residents to have such an access road.

A discussion of methodology prepares the way for an analysis of secondary research focusing on community interaction and the philosophical views regarding the road. The history of the controversy is examined and arguments both "for" and "against" are outlined. Results of a circulated survey portraying residents' attitudes are included and finally, recommendations are suggested.
