Two 4th year Trent University students in the Geography Program were enlisted to complete this project. The use of literature reviews, secondary source surveys, in person interviews, and phone interviews were used to identify the feasibility of developing the trail network. "Examining ATVing Trends and Economic Benefit","Stacy Kirkbride",,,,2010,"PD 673",,"
This paper discusses current trends and economic benefit studies as they relate to the recreational use of ATVs. In particular, a focus has been placed on future trends and impacts as they relate to the province of Ontario, County of Haliburton and the Municipality of Dysart et al. The purpose of the study is to provide information on the trends and economic benefits of ATVing for the purpose of informing municipal policy decisions on recreational activities and trail use.
This paper is a literature review of current information related to ATVing trends and economic impacts, but does not constitute a full study on the actual economic impact as it directly relates to the municipality of Dysart. Particular emphasis is placed in predictions for future use and related policy. Studies have been reviewed that identify and examine economic impacts in other areas; including managed ORV trail systems. Conclusions have been provided for future research opportunities.

","Report addresses concerns of staff at Haliburton Forest regarding the environmental impacts of snowmobiling.","Episodic acidification events have been found to occur in fresh water lakes throughout North-eastern Cananda and the United States. In Ontario specifically, these events occur north of the Precambrian Shields southern boundary in a region that contains the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve Ltd. The determination of timing of specific events is difficult because of the ubiquitous nature of the event itself. Modelling of hydrographs and the acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) of the surface water, is suggested by some researchers as a method of predicting timing and duration of these events.
The majority of policy created to deal with these episodic acidification events has been based on research concerning the deposition of anthropogenic sulfates and nitrates. However, this study suggests that point source emissions from snowmobiles can also contribute to sulfate concentrations in the snow pack that may elevate the intensity of the acidification events during the spring thaw. Critical loads were calculated for the study lakes in the Haliburton Forests and Wildlife Reserve Ltd. using the Steady-State Water Chemistry Model. From these calculations and the analysis of snow samples it was determined that current inputs of acidifying compounds have concentrations just below the critical limits for biota in the lakes. It is therefore suggested that the number of snowmobile trail passes sold per day remain at 100 and trails across lakes be limited where possible. It is also recommended that further study take place on an increased number of lakes to determine differences in acid sensitivity and critical loads, while monitoring of both deposition and point source emissions continue.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"acidification,Environment Studies,Haliburton Forest,pollution,recreation,snowmobiling,trails",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/220cdaead4a6a94e07fb4d9383a84e75.pdf,,"Trent University - Community Based Research",1,0

Haliburton highlands Trails and Tours wants to know what the best practices other trail organizations are using to manage their trails by using volunteers. Volunteers play an important role in non profit organizations and are of great value to these organizations. Therefore it is of great importance that Haliburton Highlands has an effective volunteer management process and will be a useful tool in developing and will be a useful tool in developing the organizations volunteer policies. Key areas discussed are how to reward and recognize volunteers. The purpose of this is to develop the volunteer system so that it will contribute to trail management at Trails and Tours.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"Environment Studies, outdoors, partnerships, recreation,Social and Health Studies,trails,volunteers",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/8dbac84083b526bc5acc56d18573f269.pdf,,"Trent University - Community Based Research",1,0

As a result, this paper aims to provide general background information to help the program committee make informed, specific decisions regarding the incorporation of art on local trails systems and help initiate a partnership between Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network and the Arts community. The primary question posed was, “What is the potential for incorporating art on trails in Haliburton County?” with the following sub-questions: What other communities have incorporated art on trails? What is the potential for having art on trails in Haliburton County in terms of pre-existing or potential attributes in the area? What are some of the potential benefits and challenges of having art on trails?
Research findings show that there are many communities that have incorporated art on trails and that it remains a more recent phenomenon for larger project scales. There also proves to be limited available resources and information surrounding the success and challenges that these communities have faced while initiating the projects. As illustrated within this paper, Haliburton County has extensive trails systems, a substantial art community, a good start to the networking needed to make such a venture possible and a successful example of the incorporation of art on trails in their very own community.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"arts,Cultural Studies,recreation,tourism,trails",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/706c20dbca90d464d710209c33cb4465.pdf,,"Trent University - Community Based Research",1,0

The author begins with a literature review of trails, trail use, snowmobiling, legislation regulating snow machine use, and codes of ethics around trail use. Research methodology, employing interviews and questionnaires with snowmobile users and groomers, is outlined and results analyzed. There is a discussion of the results, and recommendations are put forward regarding the establishment of a code of ethics. The author's proposed code of ethics is included in the report.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"Environment Studies,ethics,snowmobiling,trails",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/d8ded4d715db6e35d23912b65612c3ff.pdf,,"Trent University - Community Based Research",1,0

The lack of value for canoe routes, and their historical significance, has lead to issues such as that of accessing private property by the public. On one side those that abuse the privilege of enjoying the natural environment of a canoe route do not value the land that they use.
Similarly those that demand ownership of the land and deny access to other humans are not contributing to the complex interactions that are formed with these natural landscapes. This issue is examined through case studies and examples.","Trent University",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"canoeing,Cultural Studies, land use,recreation,tourism,trails",https://database.ulinks.ca/files/original/f4a21be610a0b74137d04ffda67e0bcd.pdf,,"Trent University Bioregionalism Program (1990-2000)",1,0
