    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Six sites along the shoreline of Kawagama Lake were sampled in the fall of 2019 to determine the composition of their benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Results from the project were inconclusive, but show that Kawagama Lake has some relatively pristine areas of shoreline with little to no disturbance. The project authors recommend that sampling continues in the fall of each year in order to determine the overall health of Kawagama Lake with more certainty.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[Kawagama lake Calcium Decline Mitigation Cost Benefit Analysis]]></dcterms:title>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Calcium is a vital nutrient for plant growth and ecosystem function, both aquatic and terrestrial. The decline of calcium in lakes and soils is occurring in watersheds across the boreal shield, as a result of acid deposition and land use practices such as silviculture. The decline of calcium is concerning because it can cause major changes to food webs and ecosystem functioning. Nutrient contents in catchment soils are connected to the levels seen in lakes through interactions between soil surfaces and surface waters in the riparian zones of watersheds, as well as the biological, geological, and meteorological processes occurring throughout the watershed.<br />
In response to the concerns over calcium decline expressed by members of the KLCA, a literature review was conducted in 2019 to raise awareness for the mechanisms, consequences, and mitigation options of calcium decline. Building on that momentum, this study seeks to assess the current state of calcium pools in the Kawagama Lake watershed and make recommendations for mitigation efforts.]]></dcterms:abstract>

According to that lake plan, one area of concern includes Friendly Boating Practices on the Kennisis Lakes, and a boating code of conduct. This project identifies the environmental issues related to the use of personal water crafts, recommendations on how to avoid causing these issues, and management options viable for Kennisis Lake.]]></dcterms:abstract>

More sites on Kennisis Lake need to be sampled in order to gain a better understanding of the health of the lake as a whole.     <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The aim of the Kennisis Lake Community Based Environmental Monitoring Program is to collect key data in order to monitor change in, on, and around the lake. The monitoring of change is essential to identifying threats to the lake and to track positive progress of initiatives created by the Plan. It should also help to identify areas that require further research. This project not only has monitoring goals but also has important educational and community building aspects. A major goal of the project is to get community members out interacting with each other and their environment. This is critical in order for 2 cottagers to make connections between human activities and the consequences to the lake ecosystem. The ability of young children to connect with nature early on significantly influences their attachment to the environment later on in life. The vision of this project is that it will foster ongoing environmental responsibility. The overall Community Monitoring Program needs to be meaningful and to function in cottagers’ minds. Therefore, this project should continue to evolve to fit the changing needs of the Lake and its community. This program should also facilitate community spirit and will hopefully reach out to some who have yet to directly engage directly in shared lake stewardship. This program could serve as a wonderful example of the power of citizen science. The result will be a greater understanding and feeling of responsibility for Kennisis Lake and the information collected from these programs should also shape future research and policy decisions on Kennisis Lake.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Natural shorelines are an important part of an ecosystem, where native vegetation provide erosion control; protects water quality, habitat, for both fish and animal species, and help preserve the ecological balance of aquatic environments. The increasing number of inhabitants moving towards lakes and rivers has cleared or replaced this natural vegetation with non-native species. The problem is many people that perform these alterations are doing so without knowing the impacts that they are causing. The purpose of this report is to look at different types of promotional undertakings by community groups, organizations, and conservation authorities that promote natural shorelines. Data is collected on how these groups approach the preservation and restoration of natural shorelines via three avenues: stewardship, regulations, and incentives. The information gathered from these sources will be used to recommend a natural shoreline action plan for the Kennisis Lake Planning Committee to undertake.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[The Ontario Benthic Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) employs an effects-based approach using macroinvertebrate-based sampling to assess ecosystem health. This study utilizes benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators to understand the ecosystem health of Koshlong Lake in Ontario. The OBBN protocol categorizes macroinvertebrates into 27 groups based on taxonomic classification, providing a comprehensive understanding of the benthic community. Water chemistry analysis and examination of macroinvertebrate diversity and abundance calculations are also included, with the results being contrasted against proportions of sensitive taxa and their correlated &quot;typical&quot; ranges for the region. The presence of the invasive Spiny Waterflea is noted but not extensively studied in this project. Furthermore, diversity index values align with observations from other lakes in the region, indicating a healthy ecosystem. However, additional data collected over at least five years is necessary to establish long-term trends and determine if the observed values represent typical conditions for Koshlong Lake. Collaborating with the Koshlong Lake Association, this study provides valuable insights into the stressors and overall health of the lake ecosystem.]]></dcterms:abstract>

    <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[When considering how land has been developed in rural communities of Southern Ontario it is important to consider all of the different social and economic factors that have led to the unique growth each area. The research within this report highlights there factors and is specific to one small hamlet in Haliburton County. The hamlet in the study is Gooderham, which, like many other small rural hamlets, originally developed because of the resource industry. The extraction of resources created a need for services because of the large number of people the industry employed. The services tended to develop in areas that had the most appropriate physical features and in areas that were close to the resource extraction sites. Gooderham developed in Glamorgan township along the Monck road towards the end of the 19th century. It grew just south of Pine Lake because of a great location for a water powered mill. The research examines how Gooderham has changed to a service based economy from it&#039;s early days as a resources based economy.  Gooderham provided many services during the resources extraction time period but the services that developed were geared towards a resource based economy. Today, the residents of Gooderham no longer rely on the same services. Today, cottagers, commuters, and retirees make up the population of Gooderham and modern services include home renovation, communications (phone, internet), road works, plumbing, electrical, heating, contracted service work, home building companies, etc. Many of these services are non-local but still contribute a great deal to the economy of Gooderham. When examining this report the reader will be taken through a detailed history of the area with an emphasis on how, where, and why the land was developed the way that it did in the hamlet of Gooderham.]]></dcterms:abstract>
