This research was conducted for the Canning Lake Property Owners’ Association in conjunction with the Trent University Geography Department as an honours project satisfying a degree requirement. The research was conducted at the Minden Land Registry Office through the consultation of the Abstract Index of land titles and the appropriate deeds of ownership. A transition from rural to recreational land-use is evident in the 1950s and 1960s with the initial subdivision of lots into individual properties. It has also become clear that there is a second transition beginning in the 1980s and currently underway where land-use is shifting from recreational to residential uses on properties around Canning Lake as more people are using their “cottage” as their primary residence and where a seasonal operation has been converted into year-round habitation. The state of community and school partnerships in Haliburton County is explored along with the attitudes of teachers and other administrators to such ideas. Future directions and implementation strategies for the proposed community involvement program are looked at with specific reference to Haliburton Highlands Secondary School. This handbook is an opportunity for you to explore a variety of ‘green’ options for housing renovation and construction projects in Haliburton County. Using environmentally friendly materials, or ‘green building’ as it is commonly known, is a growing practice worldwide.

Haliburton County is the setting of the Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Sir Sanford Fleming College, and so the area has the unique opportunity of having some buildings, built using alternative and environmentally friendly materials, open to the public. There are many advantages to using these materials when doing your next construction and renovation project. By using materials from a local source and alternative sources of energy, you can lighten your load on the environment. By improving the energy efficiency of your home, you can reduce your heating bills and lighten the load on your pocketbook. Data was gathered by reviewing literature on rural geography , sustainable communities and environmentally friendly building. Results determined that there are many environmentally friendly materials for housing construction and renovation, including some locally available options within Haliburton County. This data led to the creation of handbook which will act a reference guide to community members and will be distributed through the local organization Environment Haliburton.

Survey responses were compared between income groups and between permanent and seasonal residents. These comparisons revealed that regardless of income or resident status, cost is the most prevalent deciding factor in residents' choice of whether or not to use environmentally friendly material or alternative energy sources in a construction or renovation project. These include durability and longevity, affordability and environmental impact. Survey responses also expressed concern over the lack of available information about sustainable building options. ]]>  Its purpose is to aid the Atlas Project in determining a process towards the completion of the final Atlas. It studies the existing literature on geographic regions, landscapes and bioregions as well as mapping natural and cultural landscapes.  Focus groups interview techniques were used to gather the Highlands residents' ideas and input towards the cultural aspects of their communities and the Highlands themselves.   ]]> Departments: Canadian Studies and Environmental Studies]]> Departments: Canadian Studies and Environmental Studies]]> Beginning with a look at the philosophical principles behind bioregional economics, this paper goes on to provide a critique of capitalism before moving into a discussion of the informal economy as compared with the conventional economy. As one of the many activities within the informal economy, LETSystems are a locally-supported and directed strategy for sustainable community development.  The author looks at the beginnings of the LETSystems on Vancouver Island in 1983, moves into an analysis of how such a system of barter and trading can regenerate a local economy, and provides a look at some of the potential obstacles to its success.  Finally, the paper addresses the possibilities of such a system working within Haliburton County and proposes recommendations for further research.
