<text>The counties of Northumberland, Haliburton, Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes have expressed concerns about youth out migration. Each of the four counties had major regional differences with Haliburton being an exception in most cases. The causes of youth out migration were linked to factors such as lack of employment, post secondary education, and the relationship between the youth and their community. It was found that there was an abundance of services available to the youth that were being underutilized. When analyzing what entices youth to return to their community four common trends was found: attachment to family and community, availability of jobs in the community, financial situation and relationships. These findings are useful when creating strategies in sustaining and increasing the community’s population.</text>

<text>HMKCWF proposed the remodel of the current Water Heroes website to develop a more fun and interactive way for people of all ages to gain additional water-based knowledge. The current Water Heroes website (www.waterheroes.ca) was designed as a way to participate in the Big Splash Contest to encourage children to continue learning after the Haliburton-Muskoka-Kawartha Children's Water Festival (HMKCWF). Currently, the HMKCWF is held once every year in Haliburton county, based off of the Friends of Ecological and Environmental Learning (FEEL) mandate to further public education and understandings of Ontario's ecosystems. The HMKCWF is a free event that provides thousands of students across the Trillium Lakelands District School Board the chance to further their water knowledge through interactive activities. <br /><br />The Water Heroes website has become a tool for these students to further their knowledge learnt at the HMKCWF and additionally participate in the Big Splash contest. Our job has been to remodel the website to provide an entertaining environment, through the use of fun learning activities and tools conducive to a positive learning environment for both children (grades 2-8) and parents/ teachers. As well as to consider different learning styles and abilities as each person has individual needs. <br /><br />The goal of this remodel was to develop content that would further additional use of the current website and to make relevant information more available to all age ranges. As well as to increase the amount of time children and their families spend on the website to increase the amount of water knowledge they have through a wide array of topics.</text>

<text>Kabakwa Lake’s 2023 Benthic Macroinvertebrate Water Quality Assessment was completed as part of an aquatic biomonitoring program by U-Links in conjunction with Kabakwa Lake owners, such as Bill Forbes. The 2023 visitation was the third year of sampling, which contributed to the long-term dataset required to determine water quality trends. Benthic macroinvertebrates (hereafter, benthos) are invertebrates that spend most or all of their lives in water which can make them susceptible to organic pollution (Jones et al., 2006; Borisko et al, 2007). Benthos in conjunction with water chemistry data can be used to access the health of a lake (Carbone et al, 1998).
This summary seeks to provide stakeholders with a preliminary indication of the health of Kabakwa Lake (hereafter, Kabakwa). This is done though explaining what the benthos community assemblage infers about the current water quality of Kabakwa. The objectives for 2023 include (1) collecting benthos through a modified OBBN sampling protocol; (2) identifying collected benthos in lab and sorting them into OBBN groupings; (3) quantifying each group using metrics to determine abundance, richness, and diversity; (4) interpreting the results to provide an assessment of Kabakwa’s water quality. </text>
